Stupidfuck, I read the NPC chat when I'm taking a new quest. No, it's not well written and it is far from creative. EQ2 lore is rehashed EQ1 lore, because in the 500 years since the shattering nothing happened and no one did anything except sit around and wait for old areas to get opened up. Nothing new happening here.
EQ1 didn't begin with some grand literary creation. The game world was originally predicated on the home-brewed game world that McQuaid and company used in their AD&D games and was no more nor less imaginative than the home-brewed game worlds used by so many other first time DMs. When translated into an online game world and presented hundreds of thousands of players, it's instant familiarity makes it accessible but it soon begins to wear thin since everyone has been there and done that.
If you want to be all emo with "OMG, the lore writer is bailing on SOE. God, we should all wear black and call in sick to work so that we can mourn this horrible loss", then knock yourself out with enough wailing and lamenting to make yourself feel comfortably miserable. And punch yourself in your own cunt.
