Not to mention that there are times when you don't want to use some buffs.
IE, as a conjuror, perhaps there are times when you don't want your pet having ember seed. Or you're buffing a player who doesn't want ember seed, but DOES want other buffs. Etc.
The reason they're multiple spells isn't to make it a pain in the ass to buff, it's because
A) You may want to split them onto seperate people,
B) You may not want to use the buff at a certain time,
C) The scout may not want stealth broken because your spell sucks cock.
Or, possibly, all of the above.

Spell consolidation can only do the following:
1 when applied to buffs...It will limit the amount of choices you have to make. (minor or major). It will make the conc system totally redundand. Easy mode ftl....(The proper solution would be more buffs to make the conc system mean more then it does now, and force you to have to make decissions)
2 When applied to debuffs: Also here it will limit the choices you have to make. Maybe some classes have to many debuffs, for most classes I think its about right. It makes me think about what I do on what encounter in which order...Easy mode ftl.
3 When applied to ca's/spells......easy mode ftl.
Even now I am waiting on refresh of spells/ca's during longer then 45 secs fights. I hate having nothing to do, and looking at my toon auto attacking some npc someone else is tanking.
MAYBE there are some classes who need a mini revamp. But a full scale spell consolidation can only ruin this game.

Maybe this year means we get the shaft yet another year.
And there is no reason not to consolidate the SAME spells, not any of this 1 buff/debuff spell crap, that is stupid. But spells like salve, there is no reason to have 8 versions of the same spell in your spellbook. But you would also have to be able to set the hotkey at the teir you want. For example druids to proc infusion will use the t2 group heal, you should be able to put the t2 and t8 versions in your hotbar, but only have 1 spell in your spellbook.
And the one druid portal spell would be sweet as well, like the lon card you get to pick where you want to go.

Anyone who thinks that removing mundane stupid mechanics = easy mode is a complete idiot.
Buffs are mundane stupid mechanics. There is no strategy behind the bulk of them. The only penalty for dying is a time sink.
Why in the fuck would I give my pet ember seed anyway? And since Ember Seed isn't a group or raid buff, why the fuck do you think it would be consolidated? The only ones that need consolidated are the group and raid ones.
If they aren't going to allow for consolidating the group buffs, and the pet buffs (IE casting an offensive pet, or a defensive pet) the at least let Mages run while casting buffs. I sit for over 1 minute of constant casting after a wipe, while damn near every other class in the game runs around and casts buffs, or doesn't have any worth while to worry about.
Consolidating buffs and pet spells is the only way that I would be able to salvage a tiny morsel of fun out of my Conjuror anymore. ~20 spells per death is ridiculous.

EQ2 is where it is because it's dull, unimaginative, and mostly too chicken shit to do anything interesting. It's the vanilla of MMOs.
Guild Halls will show up once WoW has them and the EQ2 dev team have something to copy.

Make all group buffs .5s cast time. Problem solved.
Spell consolidation is just as dumb as having group buffs take 2-3s to cast each.
