I don't see EQ2 closing anytime soon. There are MMO's out there that are still going on one or two servers with skeletal crews and a few thousand subscribers, so it will be around for a while. However I can see it becoming like EQOA, stagnate and pretty much dying a slow death with only a player base of diehards left. If VSOH turns out to be half as good as they are claiming it will be, it will simply be too much competition for eq2 as these games share the same genre in the mmo world. But only time will tell. I had fun in eq2, made (and lost! ) alot of friends, two of which have become longtime rl buddies, as passionate about gaming as I am. That alone made it worthwhile.

DirectX 10 will be free. Hard to upgrade to No? But if you mean that people may have to upgrade there 8 year old PCs for something alittle more recent then you may be absoletely right! After All You cant play a playstation 3 game on a playstation 1, can you?

Who would buy a PL in EQ2 or WoW? there both Ez Mode levels! so ya thats why they estimate those kind of hours and prices for power levels in thopse games. Because if someone is that lazy they are probably willing to wait that ammount of time and pay w/e price they ask.

Seems to me EQ2 expected people to upgrade too. I remember a LOT of folks commenting on the system reqs and saying "Nah, probably I won't play". I know hubby and I saved for a long time to afford new video cards before Novemeber 1004!

Video cards must have been quite pricey during the Black Plague. =p

The level of competition in eq2 is high, but only because they wanted it to be. Learning, relearning, and dealing with the endless circle of death of being a top end guild is what gets to people i think. Also, i've noticed about 75% of all the people playing in any game that wants to just be hard core, end up quitting about a month or 2 after they attain their high end guild goal. They have been sacrificed to the meat grinder of burn out. More blood for the altar!

Unless I remember wrong, DirectX 10 will only be available for Windows Vista, which opens a completely new can of upgrading worms for a lot of people.

As for Vanguard and it's hardware requirements: I run a custom built system with an AMD 3200+, 2Gigs of system ram, dual nVidia 6600GT pci video cards, and after a whopping 16Gig download I remain underwhelmed. I run eq2 at 1600x1200 on "balanced" or "high quality", Vanguard runs like shit even at 1024x768. I know this is a beta, but damn.

From having formerly run two 6600GT cards in SLI mode, I can tell you for certain you would feel about a 2x performance increase just from switching to just one 6800GT card, which shouldn't be hard to do for about 100 bucks anymore.

Going all the way to a 7800GS if you only have AGP, or a 7900GT if you have PCIE, it would feel like you are working on a Cray workstation relative to what you have now.

I recently took an old stock compaq desk comp with a 3400 AMD, and only upgraded the RAM to 2 Gb, and the card to a 7800GS. It feels to me like that comp runs EQ2 10x better than a previous system I just threw in the dumpster, which was a custom built machine on an ASUS mb running twin 6600GTs in SLI.

EQ2 has serious issues with SLI. A friend cannot get the game to run properly and can only get hit or miss type performance. When it is "on," it is spectacular.

I of course wouldn't know. My systems are so out-dated and crappy, Antonica looks like it is covered in a nasty carpet and every toon looks like it is wearing a wet suit.
