Icon14 AoC: will it wipe out EQ2?

So, the next big MMORPG, Age of Conan, has just been released. Talk of it is everywhere in EQ2, including these forums, ingame chat channels, guildchats, etc.

It seems like there was a large exodus from Nagafen to AOC, from some smaller PVP servers, and even PVE servers. Many longtime players quit.

AOC threads are everywhere here, including this one.

What are your thoughts? Is EQ2 going to fall over or have a large boulder thrown at it, or something else?

Kill? No. Hurt? Yes.

It's already apparent that AoC is not another Vanguard.

It's one thing to resist, but another thing to resist after you've honestly tried it.

I think inevitably there will be ppl leaving to try out the new game, I`m certainly not one of them but its just human nature to try something new. I do know a lot of ppl leaving to join AOC but i`m taking into point that same thing happened with Vanguard- LOTR etc so probably a bit quiet for 2-3 months while they get their head around the fact eq2 is much better game and rejoin. By then I`m hoping there will be an expansion and lvl raised to 100. That the changes to the wizzie make them a greater char than they are ( you have to agree they are great), and that the AA is raised to 180. leaving a lot of catch up for those that left to come back too.
and to boot! their plat gets shared among the ppl left in their guilds that they left to join AOC.
And if they are leaders of a guild that left to play AOC then they should run naked around the zones for two months. and if female toon maybe 3 months.
All in All I don`t think AOC will take out eq2, I have a little faith that eq2 will continue to grow and all the issues we all have with the game will be fixed. (GULP!) soooooo many.
To those that leave for AOC see you soon.

I've figured as much!

I can't play it since financial issues and such. The monthly fee itself is the same as EQ2's, but you know, buying the game itself... plus I probably can't run it, and my family hates MMOs. ;P

I see your point, it just looks like AOC is no Vanguard. ;P Look at all the praise it's getting so far. A lot of guilds are duct-taping themselves and such, metaphorically, lol.

Depends if the PvE content is good enough. I have no doubt it will steal the PvP from eq2, because that was like sloppy seconds of Eq2 to begin with, verses a new game that put a lot of effort into their combat system - I don't see pvp'ers coming back to Eq2. If I had wanted to play PvP i'd have joined WoW, that was a main reason I tried Eq2 and NOT WoW...was the heavier focus on PvE. (as a hardcore FPS player PvP disgusts me as a joke for true pvp ;)) But people have fun with it and I can't knock someones enjoyment too much.

Aside from pretty graphics, I have not heard much about gameplay. I really want to buy the game but I can't justify spending the $50 yet, as nothing has leaped out yet and impressed me. It looks like a lot of fun. Just cause nothing has leaped out at me though doesn't mean I won't fall in love with it once I get into it possibly. IME game descriptions are always crap and you have to play it all for yourself to get a good evaluation.

But listening to someone playing it, sounds like I did when I started Crysis. Every few minutes I had to rave about how amazing the enviroment and graphics were...and when I ran out of graphics to talk about well...I realized the game sucked and have not really played it since. I will probably wait a good 30 - 60 days to see if this game is worth getting established in.

Last two games I bought were Call of Duty 4 and Crysis. Crysis's graphics kept me intereted for 3 weeks, haven't played since. Call of Duty 4 is an amazing game and pretty fun, I still play it for hours on end when I'm bored with Eq2. Still reserving more judgment until I get a first-hand try but I am gonna need to hear about more than the graphics to be convinced. I learned my lesson in buying a game based on that alone.

no because not everyone has the pc to play AoC with over 25 fps at the moment... i think warhammer will kill eq2 though.

Sounds painful.
But seriously where was you when Vanguard launched? just about everyone was wanking over it or whatever =x

Personally the only good thing about AoC is the graphics and with all the latest platforms and advances it was naturally going to be better anyway unless your dev team sucked cock and decided something vastly different.
The combat system is all nice and unique now, coupled with the graphics and a seemingly amazing dev team then you have yourself a pretty game but not amazing at all so that's why I'm not buying it yet.
