Your theory holds some weight, because for a long time, the only think sages could make were spells.
But anyway, the odds of actually mentoring a noob and getting that rare master you need are so against you, it's ridiculous.
Throwing some numbers out there:
Assume target spell is lvl 52.
24 classes, approx 2.5 spells per level at 52 = 60 total spells.
Odds of getting a master from a named that can drop 52 masters = 1/5
Lets assume the named can drop 51-54 masters = 1/4
These are all approximations, but you're looking at approx chance of getting your desired master at:
1/(60 * 5 * 4) = 1/1200 or a .08% chance per named kill.
The named I had in mind when doing this was the Thexian named in SE corner of Lfay which I have gotten a 52 AT master from before when leveling.
