As a leather tank, my advice would be :
1) Gear - Make sure you are wearing the best gear for a balanace of high mitigation, avoidance, and aggro generation.
2) Aggro - Lock down the mob your tanking. Save your emergency aggro abilities for if you loose aggro. Theres no need to rescue when the mob's already on you.
3) Positioning - Be aware of where you are in relation to the raid. Allow healers to heal you, while keeping the back of the mob to the dps. Also, know if a mob has knockback and position him to where he won't knock your raid off a cliff or into lava. Once you find your spot, Stay Put!

1) know your class, this game isnt about button mashing ALL the time, knowing how to hold agro or prevent yourself from going squish in hard times is all a tank is about

2) know the zones / mobs, if your new to somewhere, you better damn well be paying enough attention to be able to repeat the zone again without having to relearn it

3) know the gear, if your a raid MT or OT, make sure your getting the gear thats actually going to help you and your raid force, does no good to take everything that drops if its a minor upgrade only to replace it a few days later with something better, avoidance = key (obviously this doesnt always work before everything has been disco'd or most has been at least, but it helps to know what the best setup is going to be with gear and work towards that)

For OT,

1) Target Macro for each add type bound to your number keys on your keyboard.
2) Long range bow.
2) High amount of AE DPS.

And for good measure
4) Hope your raid has as a good MA and everyone follows.

  1. First off a Raid Tank must have a reserved EGO. Nothing is worse than a MT who thinks he/she is god's gift to EQ2, knows everything about the game, and gets pissy after wiping over and over. This does not mean they are to take shit from their guild all the time, sure there are going to be instances where you will need to tell people to STFU, but overall a MT needs to realize they are just a soldier in the raid, just like everyone else.
  2. A Raid Tank must have great backup. This means that you can have the best gear in the game, but without a great guild and great players in your guild, you are going to suck. Just because some guild is recruiting you for a raid tank slot, does not mean you are going to be able to tank raid mobs.
  3. A Raid Tank also needs lots of time to play EQ2 uninterrupted. The occasional wife agro is ok, but the rest of the time, raid tanks needs to show up to raids on time, and be ready to play for several hours without needing to step away from the computer for extended amounts of time.
Everything else will come in time.....

Having the wife as an MT healer works.

If you insist on targeting using Tab, tap ESC first and it guarantee's you pickup your closest target.

I know you didnt ask for input from healers but here's my plea anyway, please please dont run around once you've engaged the mob - if I cant see you I cant heal you. I do understand it's hard for you to keep the aggro sometimes with the high dps classes trying to pull it off you and some mobs dont have the manners to stay put. Positioning of the raid members is paramount.
For what it's worth then, plant your mob, keep him focussed on you (taunts) and turn him once in a while for your scouts (with my ranger head on)

1. positioning
2. let the other ppl in your grp do their job. if your in a somewhat dedicated raid guild, they should be good players and thus know what to do in every situation. havin harmony in mt grp is necessary imo
3. create a new character, a paly. name the toon Arthur Leet'Zor ... pull a rabbit, one with long sharp teeth, and then ... RUN AWAYYYYY
