Re: Vanguard, AoC now War???
Because people refuse to accept that, regardless of it's many failures, Everquest and it's successor have managed to get it right...for the most part. Storied lore, extensive player history and reliable expansion have proven far more successful than those MMOs whose play is based on only one of those successes. AoC was supposed to be the PvP answer to the PvP failings of EQ2. Bottom line was that it pretty much lacks anything else. The only real MMO exception is WoW, and to say its player base is rabid is an understatement. But WoW is a simple pick up and play and lacks real game engine depth. Dozens of MMOs are conjured up every year, but many die mid-code due to lack of decent support, buzz and the promise of longevity. EQ2 simply has the staying power. Vanguard was supposed to be the EQtruist's answer to MMOs, it failed. AoC is similarly failing, regardless of the good reviews its gotten. The next company that can create a deep lored, expansive game that listens to its players and continues to grow will succeed. Genres like Star Wars, Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons are the types that will usually succeed.

Re: Vanguard, AoC now War???
EQ2 hasn't gotten shit right. The only advantage it has over AoC and VG is 3 years of patching over them making it "less buggy" / "more finished" product.

7 days, and even that was me slacking at the end, and yea i'd sure like to see AoC with 4 years of patches, prosuming they keep on the track they have started on rather then completly fucking everything up like SOE did.

Re: Vanguard, AoC now War???
Aion will probably succeed because it's the one MMO that isn't being pushed out the door as fast as possible. The devs have warned of a long wait for launch because they don't want to launch anything less than a perfectly functioning product. They don't want their players to be "paying beta testers".
But it won't capture a huge amount of the EQ/EQ2/WoW crowd imo. But it'll probably smash the asian market.

Currently I think the only company that can manage to create a story-driven, lore-rich MMO is BioWare. They announced some years ago, that they opened a new studio to develop an MMORPG. Since now, there were no news and looking at the development time of BioWare's actual titles it could take five years or more before they even send out news about it.
