Default How nasty are the public channels on your server?

I made a post about this same issue on the SoE official boards recently, but it was quickly deleted, so I thought I'd post my thoughts about it here instead.

I'm no prude, and in fact have travelled to many different countries in the world and have seen some of the nastiest and most unnatural things ever done on this planet. Usually, however, those things are done in a private place, and for a reason, and involve consenting adults.

How does this relate to EQ2? I've observed the chat on many, but not all, different servers now. The range of vulgarity, obscene and pornographic descriptions, and sheer rudeness varies incredibly between the servers, at least in my observation.

On my current server, Unrest, it almost seems like an unusual occurence when people are openly rude to each other, and is a head turner when someone actually uses the F word in a public channel. In general, I would classify the worst chat on the server, in the 60-69 channel, to be almost G rated, or PG-13 at worst.

Compared to my previous server, Nektulos, this is a night and day difference. Conversation in the Nek public channels are "as nasty as you wannabee". I was frequently surprised on Nek to read highly detailed descriptions of gay butt sex, heterosexual sex acts, acts involving hamsters who had their claws and teeth removed and were inserted inside anuses with a string attached for removal, and all manner of farm animal sex. The chat on this server was the most explicit of any I'd seen on any server, by far, and I'd go so far as to give it a triple X rating on many or even most days.

Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this, mind you. I really liked Nek, and the people on Nek. I just don't personally care to read explicit sexual conversations in public channels, but I do like a good insult contest between intelligent people.

What I'm amazed by is that SoE allows this to continue, month after month. Cursing in channel used to get warnings, I honestly don't believe they even respond to /reports for vulgarity and extremely sexual comments anymore. It seems to me the only thing SoE will currrently take action against is racist comments, which they will ban for immediately without the possibility of reinstatement.

I'm just curious about all this, and wondering whether SoE came out with a new "anything goes" policy regarding nasty speech in public channels. And if so, why do they go to such great lengths to enforce against that speech on their own forums (even making the name of this site, eq2flames, a profane term blocked by the profanity filter), while allowing language far worse to take over the public channels on entire servers.

Maybe it has something to do with the methods in which they capture the channel speak. The forums are lasting written evidence that is there for anyone to see at anytime going foward after the post is made. I am not sure how they capture in-game chat, but I would imagine that any incidents of vulgarity have to be reported in order for them to view it? I think the answwer may lie there.

Our channels on permafrost can get kinda rude, especially towards Plat farmers and total tards. Late Nite US tends to get a little raunchy, but it stays pretty tame until someone acts stupid then its like this forum in real time

Not being able to edit posts will cause double posts like this one. Furthermore after actually reading your post LFG, the first thing that comes to mind is who peed in your cheerios ? Relax its a game full of mostly high school and college students, use your profanity filter its there for a reason. Trying to teach your kid the game? Teach him how to use the /ignore command. Frankly if hes younger than 10 this game is likely over his head anyway.

What an interesting experiment. I'd like to put an 8-year-old kid in front of this game and see how well he does.

3 posts in a row, sure would be nice to edit posts more than 30 seconds after they go through. In game profanity is moderated by /reports from the community. I know a lot of these fall by the wayside, and arent reviewed. As far as how many reports it takes to get banned or suspended, i really dont know what thier policy is on that.

Seriously though whats the deal with not being able to edit ? Its petty lame and a big waste of space.

At least once a month I have to explain the reasons behind our edit rules. Grats, you are the winner for January.

Why we have a 15 minute edit limit:

http://www.eq2flames.com/showthread.php?t=574

Because retards start multi page drama posts, and then try and escape the consequences of their stupidity by deleting all their posts after they get owned, leaving a multi-page post carcass with half the replies deleted.

If you used the search feature on this site before asking this question, you would notice a vote about this same issue:

http://www.eq2flames.com/showthread.php?t=540

You can see that the majority of users who voted wanted to lower the posting time from 24 hours to 15 minutes, and all the reasons they voted that way.
