Default Re: What would get you to come back?

Actually as far as quests go Eq2 seems to be the most varied game of all MMO's I've tried so far (which isn't a lot but still), the only one even close to it is WoW but it lacks a lot of that random find thing that Eq2 is good at (run around and click stuff, quests can be everywhere. A book in a shelf, a dagger on a table and so on). It does have some of it but it seems so "well placed" for lack of a better word, it lacks the mystery.

Something that would be cool though is if they had more of an "adventure game" approach to some quests, combine this item with that and then talk to this guy and so on. Pick something up without actually getting a quest, keep it in your inventory, find out that someone needs a machine where your item is a part, find the other items and combine them to form the machine which you then give to the npc.
Technically we already do this through the quest dialog but it would be a lot more rewarding if we could do some of it ourselves.

Or maybe its just wishful thinking and it would all turn out tedious :D

Nothing really, I'm gone for good. The game mechanics and itemization are no longer to my liking, they would have to revamp and restructure the game for me to want to come back. Constant zoning every 5 feet, lack of itemization, lack of unpredictable raid content, the list goes on. I am glad I played EQ2 as it gave me some serious experience in the MMO world, but there are too many other games that are out and /or will be coming out for me to bother going back to it.

EQ has evolved significantly since then, though, so our new direction isn't really putting us in direct competition, but the game now more accurately lives up to many of the expectations people fond of the franchise would expect from an MMO whose title contains the word "EverQuest."

I took this to mean a slight shift towards the inclusion of "harder" content. Guess we will see what the future holds.

Well, I doubt I would ever come back but....

1. They got rid of Smelly. That idiot doesn't have a clue how to run a successful business. He needs to take lessons from Blizzard. Everyone at SOE needs to take lessons from Blizzard.

2. They fired the whole dev team and got someone in there that knew wtf they were doing, cared about the players and how things effect them in the game and people that stayed in touch with the players and actually played the game themselves.

3. Rewrote the game engine and server side to get rid of all the lag and get the client to performing like it should and work on dual core and use the video card's power like it should be. They said the EQ2 client was written for the future but I have to tell you, someone has a fucked up idea of the future.

4. Sold it to another company to where SOE no longer had any sayso, control, etc.

5. Did I mention a dev team that wasn't full of AOL programming rejects that actually knew how to fix all the problems and actually cared about fixing them?

6. Stop the use of massive overkill to make encounters a challenge. It's called the use of imagination. Something this dev team has little of.

7. Get rid of the current dev team. I know I said it several times but, it's important enough to repeat

I mean come on. The game runs worst than any game out there on high end machines. It runs like crap on their servers.

Itemization is a joke. The items they think are really cool are crap. The risk versus reward in this game is a joke. There is 10 times more risk than reward. You spend hours working your way to mobs, only to have them drop 1 friggin item and then it's something no one in the guild can use, therefore wasting 24 people's time.

The thought that goes into making encounters hard is a joke. They are lazy about making challenging encounters without the use of overkill AOEs and then they cut and paste this crap to many mobs.

They are lazy in their programming. They hack windows to where it looses it's load balancing and reduces performance, in order to fix a bug in their crappy code.

It's a disaster and the laughing stock of the MMO world. Why would anyone stay or come back? They have lost 200k people in just a years time.

Fixed

Id like to see tradeskills ( a taboo subject on flames?) go back to their pre dof lists. Id like to see the hardware that was consolidated in the server merge actually result in more server side stability / rapidity. But then I havent left the game yet.

Soz for the double post you MiB type people (is that an insult?).

They reall really need to do what you have suggested Mike. It's like SoE got some tarrot cards and said 'ok fine the future of the cpu is obviously the 5 - 10 ghz netburst architecture. I am sure that intel will solve the thermal limitations, lets assume that the gpu market does not follow moore's law and make the game completely cpu bound' whoops.

Im not accusing SoE of being really crap at tarrot readings, just that they needed, and still need, to be more flexible towards the development of new cpu and gpu cores.

Sorry spelling - I blame the pub.

Especially considering that SMP had been around LONG before they started on the game engine and considering they knew it was going to chew up a lot of power.

I mean come on, even WoW, which doesn't take a lot of power, uses dual cores/SMP.

All they would have had to do is make the engine SMP aware. They were jsut too narrow minded.

You can bash Blizzard/WoW all you want but, they had the foresight to do a LOT of things right the first time. SOE was still programming in the dark ages with blinders on.
