I will agree with you on that, Mysidia. That was just someone being nothing but an ass. That name wasn't even against any of the naming conventions that I can see and FAR from being offensive in any realm either.

Just because your toon's name was changed (did you bother to petition a GM and talk to them about it? I heard on more than one occasion people who had their names changed being allowed to get their names back after talking to a GM) doesn't mean that suddenly eveyrone should be allowed to be named whatever they want. I wouldn't have reported your name personally, but someone did, and now you have some stick up your ass, saying that anyone that reports a name is a "TOTAL FUCKING ASSWIPE," even if that name was completely against the naming policy.

Mysidia was the name of the mage town in Final Fantasy 2 (6 over in Japan).

And no, I didn't petition it. That was about the time I stopped playing EQ1.

it was the name of the town that the crystal is stolen from in the opening sequence to final fantasy four...
the main character returns later when he begins his quest to become a paladin from a dark knight.
may have been in 2, as well. but who cares if you're named after an obscure town in a final fantasy game?

What's to stop you from starting a website about your adventures as Mysidia using a bunch of screenshots? If your website makes money (like gooooogle ads), you could get sued. They would also sue SOE because the screenshots came from their game. Having a player annoyed about not being able to keep a name versus a lawsuit? You're looking at this from a moral/ethical stance not a business stance. It's risk mitigation.

I think your name is fine, Mys, but I'm not a Final Fantasy fan. Someone out there is a huge fan and will take offense that you used it. And there are people like me who are huge Raistlin fans and want to shoot people for using his name. The difference being I don't go whining to Mama to fix it, I just whine to my friends: this is me in guildchat - "Toon name Reestlin Majeer. Can I kill him?"

It all goes back to assholes; an asshole is an asshole and will be an asshole anyway they can.
