Which I understand and agree, but SOE doesn't know that about every single player. They don't want someones mistake ending up with them being sued. The risk is probably very low, and this may just be a carry over from the old EQ1 days but you can't be too careful. I don't know the ins and outs of copyright law completely (I'm sure Arth could go into this exciting subject at length) but I know at Ten Ton Hammer we're very careful about what we link and put up for content because no one wants to get sued.

A couple of reasons why your name would be in violation:

Again not saying your name is "wrong" but it does violate the naming policy, so if you do get petitioned, you have no legs to stand on. I like the name and I wouldn't know it from my own character names (90% random name generated) but someone might and someone might petition.

I'm sorry that you feel so strongly about this, and that you take it so personally, but if you are going to build a character and backstory around a name that you fully well know violates the naming policy, then you are the only one to blame when it gets changed and the story no longer "fits."

I can probably count on one hand, how many people have come up to me and mentioned the reference on my name.

Most of my pets in my toon's house have a really obscure reference.

Needle is the name of my aviak.
BigChomp is the name of my plant.
Poppy is the name of my white dog.
Bahamut is the name of my baby dragon.
Bizbit is the name of my monkey.
Tootsiepop is the name of my Hooloo.

(And if you get any of the references, you've just earned cool points.)

I do the obscure references to give a sort of "nod" or "Kudos" at the things that I loved growing up as a kid.

I'm assuming most of those are like your name FF references because they vaguely sound famliar (especially bahamut) but I haven't played that series since VII. Tootsiepop? That name is owned by Tootsie Roll Industries. Your names don't offend me and I wouldn't report a name like those. Names I will report when I rarely do are DrizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZzzzZZZt and Spoogin McCrack.

I gotta say, the names we're coming up with that would be banned and making me LOL in my office.

Bahamut is the only one with a FF reference. The others are from TV shows I watched as a kid with the exception of BigChomp. That's from another video game.

Bah….IMO that's just lame. If someone wants to use a name from something else, who really cares. I mean I find it unoriginal but it doesn't hurt anybody/anything. IMO, vulgar/offensive names should be reported. The rest ignored. Play the game.

Yeah, I agree. I can't tell you how many Tanis, Legolas, Aragorn, etc. That I've walked by and just cursed under my breath. It's the stuff that's really offensive that I have issues with. None of your names, Mysidia, would bug me.

I actually liked the Bahamut reference. He was my favorite Materia in FF VII and X.
