Not positive since i'm not in-game, but I think you might be able to "workaround" SOE's ineptitude by setting all your character detail sliders to max distance. Then, you could possibly zoom out pretty far without triggering the lower mip maps?
Yeah, I could try that... but since I *only* have a Core 2 Duo E6600 and a 8800GTS 640MB and 2G of RAM... That would kick my PC's ass. I play at my 19" LCD's native resolution (1280x1024), and call me a stickler, but I'd really like to remain at 30-60 FPS, hehe.

I believe those sliders may only affect the usage of LOD models for things. IE reduced polygon count models for far away objects. The high-poly count models might have several LODs and then they may or may not revert to their low-poly count counterparts which use completely different textures.

Mipmapping isn't often considered by games as a perfomance setting, so I doubt SoE would in the options panel. Though mipmapping has both positive and negative effects on graphic perfomance. (By increasing needed texture memory and lowering the rendering cost of a scene by displaying a lower res texture)

I've seen some odd stuff since the Dec 1st patch to help Vista OS. I run Vista, and I occasionally get the blurred items. I think you're right about the mipmap setting because I remember creating this effect when fooling with video card settings a long time ago. The wrong setting would make all my items and certain parts of the UI fuzzy / blurry. The fuzzy blurry is the effect I have now, but it comes and goes with different things, the graphic around the level number of a mob might be a smeared fuzzy thing or completely normal. I've opened my bags and had some items blurry and others not. It clears up as best I can tell at random and comes back at random as well.

So I came home from work and bit the bullet and installed Vista SP1. Then, upon discovering that I did NOT in fact have the latest recommended video drivers, I downloaded and installed those, too. When I first logged into the guild hall, I thought it had fixed it, because I couldn't get the textures to drop just through scrolling my point of view in & out. I camped to another character, still ok. I zoned out into NQ, and then into Antonica and tried again, and bam, same old shit.

Someone posted a workaround to resolve this issue:
Character Textures Spontaneously Downgrading

Basically, it seems like EQ2 was forcing you into its "low memory mode" - which was a possibility I had considered. Sadface for 2 reasons:

1> the fix came from a fellow player before coming from SOE
2> the reason we even need this fix is because of the workaround implemented because the game doesnt release memory in the first place

This is nothing compared to the random 50 hour reuse timers on my combat arts. L.O.L. Thats quality!

*shrug* It's not like that's never happened before and it's purely cosmetic. Just cast your spells like normal and nothing will impede you and your timers will reset correctly as well. Or zone... or relog.

Or if you're crazy you could change your computer's time to match the new server's time... that's all the comparison is based off of. SoE probably just changed the server's time so the comparison was off on the client-side. (And no you cannot change your computer's system time to cast spells earlier... the server decides no matter what, not the client)
