Thanks for the information. Yeah, I got a better heat sink and got rid of the stock, so I don't think that would be a problem.

Buy a GPU that isn't horrible (spend the $250-300 and stop dicking around with low end cards).
Buy a proven C2D (E8xxx) or an i7 920 and leverage their massive overclocking potential.
Spend the $90 to buy the 8GB of RAM so your system is page-proof for the foreseeable future.

That's $500 for the core components, and your system will smoke EQ2 (and almost everything else out there). This is a gaming forum. It's not unreasonable to expect someone to spend that much on core components for their box.

If you have contemporary hardware and can't run EQ2 on max settings, you're doing something wrong. I don't know what it is specifically, but you done fucked sumthin up, sonny!
Still won't run EQ2 well without one of those components rewriting the engine on the fly.

I don't doubt it looks okay to you, but those framerate claims are bullshit that even Illuminator couldn't top in a political thread.

Actual numbers with the specs you provided, I'd guess they hover between 20 and 40fps with all settings maxed, which is unacceptable.

Well i'm running a i7 920 with a gtx260 and 6 gig ddr3 triple channel and windows 7 x64, im only running in 1680x1050 max monitor rez.

i do get 60fps easily with max settings, but it can bog down to 20 in places like guild halls and crowded places.

I have vsync on because i like the smoothness, but if i took it off i would probably be 100's in some places. Of course max frame rate doesn't mean jack shit, it's the minimum that matters, and that's where some optimization of the eq2 engine would really come in handy.

Full scenes of lighting and shadows are the real killer, you'll notice if you set shader distance to 0 it turns off all shadows and lights making the game extremely playable but looking like ass.

I played with shaders set to 0 for the last 4 years, because any pc i had up untill my recent I7 just couldnt cope with shaders. Even still the I7 struggles in some places heh.

I dunno what point i'm trying to make, but i will welcome shader model 3 any day if it brings my minimum frame rate up. Nothing kills immersion in a mmo like poor framerates.

As far as the new GPU shadows go.. well... i think its a bit of a hack job to be honest. The new I7's can cope fine with the mathematically correct CPU shadows so i'll leave GPU shadows disabled till it's been through a few iterations.

That's exactly it. Spots of great performance are nothing, when the average is through the floor. We need modernization yesterday.

Yeah, I also noticed that changing the shader to 0 would drastically improve performance. It seems that the shader and particle effects are the real killers now that we have GPU shadows.

GPU shadows look amazing . . . when they are right. There are so many spots right now that have gray lines through them or flickering shadows (in the void zones specifically) that it can be a little annoying. The CPU shadows just cause too big of a hit in fps, so I will deal with the sometimes crappy GPU shadows for now. The line that controls how far out they are pixilated and when they smooth out is too close to the camera right now and could also be moved out.

The spell effects already look pretty damn good in comparison to other MMOs out there. They could use a hell of a lot more variety and originality, but the actual appearance is nice.

Nielsen reveals top 10 PC games played in 2008

The EQ2 engine is crap. It's been crap since its release in 2004. For a game released in 2004 you should be able to march into Best Buy and pick up a random $600 system with a real video card and play it on high settings.

The fact you are talking about overclocking to play this _2004_ game is fucking sad.
I know this thread is old but i just had to point out the fact that you are a total stupid ass. Only the most ignorant stupid fucks out there are still claiming PC to be a "bad" platform in ANY capacity. Your ignorance is painful and your stupidity insulting.

CoD4 is a game optimized for quad core and its #2 on the list you stupid fuck. The fact that ppl are talking about OCing for a game made in 2004 SAYS NOTHING about the sate of PC gaming and only a moron would think so.

The reason specs dont SEEM as important any more is for two reasons. Hard wear is still getting faster and cheaper. Second, games that come out now are almost all balanced around consoles so games like CoD:WaW still run fine on video cards from a few years ago. When the new gen of consoles come out the cycle will start all over, what kind of shit faced idiot hasnt cought on to this yet?

Also, no one really gives a fuck about just the top ten games. The sims and WoW dont reflect the entire PC gaming population. I really cant see any one with more than half a fucken brain being stupid enough to think they do either. Because in fact, most of the ppl playing WoW and the Sims DONT PLAY any other PC games at all besides those. This debate was over a long time ago and im suprised any one would be stuipid enough to bring it up again.

Pics would be nice

Taken from eq2wire:
Shaders 3.0
EQ2 is getting a graphical facelift!
Shaders are small pieces of code which take the textures and apply an effect to them, providing metallic appearances, glows, bump mapping, caustics (rust, decay), lighting effects, etc.
These are being upgraded from the ancient Shaders 1.0 to Shaders 3.0. Nearly any graphics card since GeForce 3 will be able to handle the new GPU Shaders. At higher resolutions, preliminary tests have shown that framerates stay largely the same. At lower resolutions, framerates of GPU shaders seem significantly improved.
This will not be a substantial download. Each shader is just a few kilobytes. So far, 3,000 shaders have been upgraded.
Nek Forest looks awesome now. The whole idea of a torch in the darkness, lighting up trees, rocks, and enemy mobs looks head-and-shoulders above the current “flat” pea soup grey haze and flat colors on everything.
When the EQ2 developers saw the first screenshots, they thought it was another game.
In addition, Flora Displacement which moved to the GPU last year will still get further performance tweaks (known issue on nVidia cards).
Finally, he’d like to move particles to the GPU but due to some design decisions, some particles are tied to animations. Will have to go back and separate them out.
There is developer interest in a torch slot, so this is being considered. Devs would also like to do High Dynamic Range (HDR) in a future update, but nothing is immediately planned.
