It's so much that people bitch about the choker, or other overpowered items, it's that they bitch at how newer loot, multiple expansions later still does not beat it.

The will of the majority is not always logical, properly reasoned, or conducive to the long term health of the community.

Just like politicans, dev teams for MMO game studios have a choice: listen to what people scream for (or against), or make a choice on their own and go forward with it. It depends how much faith you put in the intelligence of your community.

I put very low faith in the intelligence of any community. I know approximately how smart the average person is. Half of the people alive are dumber than that. This scares me on a constant basis.

So why don't they nerf auto-attack and buff CA damage? Oh, what's that? Because the community wouldn't like it, even if the game needs it? Shit. Found the flaw in your argument.

they keep trying it because there is no way to undo the balance issues that the gear has brought to the game without totally nerfing the shit out of it or turning this game into a WoW replica.

then they also need to start peeling off all the bullshit stifles that mobs have a tendency to do. that is another reason why some tanks were having issues with the fighter revamp, you have to rely more on the healer so you trade hate from others to control effects that the healer needs to cure so you can maintain aggro. as with anything there is tradeoff.

I think you are way off base firamas. Have you ever heard of the wisdom of crowds? Collectively, a crowd of people is much more intelligent than any single member of that crowd.

I think there was a book with this title.

The Wisdom of Crowds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ah, ok. I briefly tried WoW around the time of the 1st expansion, so It was already in when I tried it. Still, WoW added it alot sooner in the life of their game.

So mob mentality is a good thing!

I've always been a fan of mob mentality, but I think this would be different. I think the difference between a mob and a crowd would be emotion.

Looking at the link you provided, crowd wisdom does not apply here at all.

If that happens SOE is fucking retarded.
Thats how the dev I spoke to at FF was explaining it...

I even reworded it as "so, if I have an item thats level 77, kill something thats level 79 while I am level 78, that item gets less effective to that exact same level 79 mob if I level up?" and he confirmed it again.

Now, he could STILL be confused.. or not really get what I was asking.. but still.. the implication in how they explained it when I was there was that it degrades -as- you level, to end up at 33% as effective at 10 levels above.

Even logically, I can understand a level 78 item being less effective vs a level 80 than a level 79 mob.. but this is "you get more skilled and capable, and as a result are LESS able to use your gear"
