Except that's not what's ever been proposed and if you look at the thin spread of the current 24 and how they limit each other, the current status quo is closer to what you described than the oft proposed changes. No one would care much about dps'ing tanks and healers if there weren't so many classes that only offered DPS yet the current 24 class model practically forces people into very narrow roles. The fighters are all just tanks, the healers are all just healers, sorcs, preds, summoners are all dps( for now) and bards/ chanters are all utility. Because there are so many classes in each of those roles, it's been proven already that crossover is a disaster.
I'm not a fan of ditching classes because of human concerns but, to say it serves the game well is a fallacy and a total rethink of how they approach the class design and roles needs to happen because what they proposed at FF is going to be a disaster without it.
