No matter which fansite it is, you could never be sure that the content on their site was honest and impartial. You could never be sure the modding and banning was done impartially. You could never be sure inside information wasn't funneled to "exclusive scoops".
Even if the guy in question "walks away" from managing his site, the odds of him still having unofficial ties to it is huge.
This seems like really bad policy to me.

I don't think it's all that bad, or at least, as I have seen, in the past this hasn't been a problem in the past.
Both moorgard and blackguard came from fansites (mobhunter and eqii.com respectivly).
Besides, for what it's worth, and take from experience, SOE is very, VERY good at making sure what gets out is done through PR not community relations, two entirely seperate teams. Nothing official that gets published goes into print without being signed off by them.
Sure, there might be some unofficial stuff, but then again we all get some of that from time to time. I have been pretty clear on my concerns about conflicts of interest, and I have said I'm willing to accept any good faith acts by a company to prevent it.
In regards to this sort of thing, my experience with SOE has been positive, thus I am not overly concerned.
