I disagree that TSO was a glorified adventure pack. The 20 instances may reuse textures, but they are all unique geometry and unique encounters in their own way. I liked the shard armor, but the set pieces are overpowered and should not be repeated in T9. If you look at summoner set pieces, there are an insane amount of stats and effects compared to every other class in the game. They balanced classes through bottlenecking gear, which was a terrible solution.

I agree about setback condition opposed to fail condition. Going through RoK (since that's what I know better than TSO raids), T2 mobs like VS shouldn't have fail conditions. Get rid of the statues completely, that's a stupid thing to add and a horrible thing to do to one of the raiders. If you run low on power, make him do a semi strong aoe every 20-30s until you get your power back.
Also, if they want to add progression, make him be like 30-50% stronger (tougher skin, stronger aoe) to those who don't get the item from pawbuster(?).. while they're at it, for more progression, every time he dies, he drops an item that makes a person immune to his fear, to make him quicker and easier every time he dies (like a mastery of the mob).
The funny part is, the 'fail' conditions on boss mobs are actually easier and more what they should be. On trak, if you get the hourglass and don't get fully out of range, the raid can still survive. We've recovered numerous times from people who missed the hourglass, it just put us at serious risk of wiping, but not 24 people dropping dead at once.

The only place I currently get a lot of lag is in the woods near the hollow tree in nek forest. Given that its only a problem when I'm in tall grass, I feel pretty confident that if it really bothered me, I could tweak some settings to fix it.

Yea come to Nagafen and say that. We even had an upgrade.
90% of our lag is server side every time all the time.
When you have 6 or 7 guilds all raiding palace or tomb or what ever zone and EVERYONE gets 2-3 sec spell lag... yea that server side bro.
Then 30min later after we finish the zone go to do something else where we only see 1 or maybe two guild flags parked out front and zero spell lag. Its not hard to figure out whats going on.
Most of us are use to it though, because we see it all the time in huge pvp fights when its 50 vs 50 and the same thing happens.
Push a button 10sec later it cast, 10sec after that it actually greys out.
While you may be correct for a low pop server, high pop servers it a whole new ball game when it comes to lag and who's fault it truly is.

Palace on Unrest during the weekend is sometimes unplayable for everyone. Thats server side.

This ^^ you can calculate your lag just by counting the flags outside.

Fail effects are designed for one purpose: Time Sinks.
If there were no fail effects, with the progression of gear in the game, zones would take much less time to handle than they do now. Since content would be achieved quicker, the players would become bored faster. Having 'random' fail effects and checks for success are an easy way of making that happen.
Some can say to downtune gear to match the encounter, but no one likes a nerf. Some can say make the encounters harder, but then no one likes having to do 10dps in T8 because of a curse effect. Critical mitigation by comparison is roughly the same as EQ requiring magical weapons to do damage to mobs later in the game. However, EQ2 trivialized critical mitigation in the expansion it was released in. It would have been a much better mechanic if you could only get 30~45% critical mitigation even with avatar gear and fine tune the critical ae's for the appropriate damage on players for this expansion; and then with the release of sentinel's fate they could delve deeper into the critical mitigation side.
Each time that EQ2 has made a mechanics mistake they have released a new expansion with a level cap raise, to *fix* the trivializing of the last expansion.
What we have to look forward to now in gear are more base, reuse, cast, groupwide procs and crit bonus effects to be added to gear. Which is not that bad if you really think about how the game will progress. Critical mitigation is just a hiccup and will be reconfigured most likely but, remain important.
