Default Hypothetical Class Consolidation

DISCLAIMER: - Pure Speculation on my part. Don't read into this, I'm simply doing a "What If" Scenario.



I know this discussion has happened time and time again, but I have a different angle. Lets say Class Consolidation was going to happen... and YOU were asked for input on how to make it better... how would you do it?

Example, I'd like every subclass reduced to it's "class" component, IE All guards and Zerkers to become warriors... and give everyone up to 2 extra AA trees that they can spec for certain aspects of each class. They could use this opportunity to add new things to classes, or tweak certain details. Also, with only 12 classes and a lack of "Set Gear", adding gear would be easier, and updating spells would be easier. It would also be possible to add a new class or 2 someday. I'd like to see new dynamics added... like a healer who has to melee in order to heal his group, like his hits drain the life from the opponent and convert it into heals for the group. Or maybe a Ranged attack based mage. Specializing in throwing weapons, he uses his spells to enhance and enchant his ammunition, and to weaken his enemies against ranged attacks.

ok, I'll take a swing at this dead horse.

I would NOT reduce all subclasses to the class selections and then differentiate with AA. It might be easier to balance, but it would kill lore (ie: SK and Pally). Instead, I would just merge specific classes.

Merge:
Troubadour and Dirge
Defiler and Mystic
Fury and Warden
Bruiser and Monk
Illy and Coercer
Swash and Brig

I would consolidate it back down to the original EQ1 classes.

I'd add 12 more classes.
So instead of being a Paladin or Shadowknight, you could be a Shadowknight, Paladin, OR Crusader. the crusader would be inbetween paly and SK, just kinda neutral. kinda how it was when game launched, but the you'd be able to stay a crusader all the way up to max lvl
Battlemage would be in.
Beastmaster.
a lot more.

Question:

If you merge some classes... IE Bruiser and Monk, and let AA, or some other tree, (Maybe a "Class Choice" Tree similar to the racial choices) define them... could you not do something similar to Paladin and Shadowknight? Couldn't you be a crusader who is "Shadowknight" specced, or "Paladin" specced? Have a title be an End-Line ability or something, so if you choose Lay on Hands, you could not possibly have enough points left to choose Harm Touch., and therefore you can only truly pick one.

Basicly.. how could you merge Crusaders and keep crusaders happy? I know many would say "You can't", but if we can put a man on the moon, I'm sure we can come up with a way to do it.
