Default /record

Is it possible to add an ingame record function? In half-life you can type "record <title>" and you will have a demo of you playing saved in your game folder. This makes for movie like quality and would make pvp videos for eq2 more watchable. I'm just wondering how difficult it would be for SOE to add something like that.

well, aside from there being programs to already do that, they really need to look into getting the servers stable so they don't drop around 7:26pm EST on a tuesday.
The last thing they would want is something more in depth to have to worry about debugging etc when it is very hard for them to get right what is already in front of them.

Just get fraps.

Edit: However, this function would be sweet. I just don't see SOE doing it.

You can download a free trial of fraps at fraps.com which will allow you to record 30seconds of footage every minute or something like that. Or you can buy it for I think about $30.

Fraps is absolutely terrible for video quality. Heres a few examples of videos created for a game called DOD:S using the /record command that half life provided. http://www.trypants.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=195

They all have movie like quality. I'll try to find some fraps videos to compare and contrast, but the difference is horrendous.

Another pro about this is that the demos in the files are small, like 20mb and you can /replay them ingame and /record while you replay them. And when you record it creates HUGE files like 50GB big that will need to be compressed. But this way you can send demos to movie makes and stuff.

I was thinking about doing a "PVP of the week" video like this dod:s community has a "Frag of the week" video that is about 6 minutes long usually where different players from the community submit their best clips and then you condense them all into one neat little movie. They're really quite awesome, but I wouldn't want to do that with huge fraps files.

And about the servers, they already stated that they have mitigated the problem and have a team working on the problem and will have a solution asap. Besides they they also have several different teams working on expansions, and adventure packs.

Yeah, I will admit that fraps has some terrible quality, however, it's about the best that's out there for what we have. It would be great to have a /record command, but I doubt it will happen, and if it does, it's far off.

Captured with fraps, i let u imagine the quality, coz here, the video is encoded and compressed.

They say alot of stuff...

Anyway, back to the point...adding more features means there are more features to have to fix when things go to hell. There are other out of game programs that do have good quality you may need to pay for some or check for some of the better ones, but adding in functionallity like this would surely cause problems amongst a list of problems there already are. I assume they would use the current graphics and media folks for it, which would add more onto their jobs to figure it all out , coders to code all of the functionallity of it, just sounds like too much work for SoE when other programs CAN do this at a sufficient quality if you find the right stuff.

Once one MMO establishes this as a new minimum requirement, the other MMO's will follow. (look! they're finally adding a minimap next expansion) All we would need to do is convince SOE that they should be first this time.

Yeah... Once in a while SOE does things first... But I bet we see this out of a totally new game before we see it in EQ2

This sounds like a cool idea but honestly? How much would you use it? I mean yes I think it'd be cool to be able to capture maybe 5-10 second bits to rag on people about later but I can't imagine them doing much more than offering a built in substitute for FRAPS.
