Re: Freedom of Expression - let's talk
I think that's the biggest problem. People seem to assume that since they can be hostile here, every situation calls for it. Sure, a lot do, but sometimes people should just behave.

This is a board for the dumbfucks obviously. No "Type A" poster is ever supposed to post there as long as they are not implied, talked about, refered to, or anything dealling with them is not brought up first. Then those useless players have a board for themselves with no problems.
Oh but wait, let me guess they will be scared off by the name and tell their parents your run an unclean site right?

Re: Freedom of Expression - let's talk
I think that most of what is said here is completely fine especially with most of it being on topic of the game.
I see it as the equivalent of being at a bar in college. Being young you discuss many things such as politics, religion, and sex. These discussions get heated yelling can occur and names fly. The same stuff happens here and is completely normal and completely healthy. If you want to delv into things that would be inappropriate is that bitch that screwed the guild behind her husbands back. People get upset for getting counterpointed and called dumb for just posting their opinions which most of the time can be pretty stupid, but getting naked pictures of yourself or your wife thats not detrimental or in good fun?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the freedom of expression on this site at the current time.

Re: Freedom of Expression - let's talk
Hi all, I have lurked here for quite a while and decided to make my first post in response to this thread.
The conversations that have gone on in this thread are the EXACT reason I read this board, then flip over to the official boards only if I feel like it.
Here, I get to read unaltered commentary and insight from people who are very passionate about the game. I learn more here than in game on the official boards combined.
Sure it gets dicey and sometimes mean-spirited, but I dont have a problem with it. At the end of the day, people are people and always will be. Some boards arent for the faint-at-heart.
Anyway, just my 2copper

Re: Freedom of Expression - let's talk
I'm not finished reading this entire post but I'm going to go ahead and chime in anyways.
I don't think the problem is with this site or the SOE official boards. It's not about moderation or the lack there of. It's a pretty simple fact of life and I think George Carlin said it best.
He said that the amount someone is an asshole is directly proportional to the distance you are from that person. If you are standing in line and some guy up front is holding up the line being a dick you turn to the people around you and say "BOY THAT GUYS REALLY AN ASSHOLE!" However if you are right behind you you turn to the person behind you cover your mouth and whisper "Boy that guys really an asshole." Well with the internet you are dealing with what is virtually an infinite distance. By this I mean most people will never know the exact location of most other posters making the distance infinite. There are ways around that but people willing to put in the time and effort have their own problems to deal with.
In a normal social setting most people have filters on at all times delegating the way they act in public. When you create this infinite distance most people lose some of those filters and some even completely drop them. Add a basically unmoderated forum and with but a few exceptions these people can truly sharpen their fangs without holding back. It saddens me that a lot of people, myself included sometimes, view this, perhaps unconsciously, as a bit of a release.
The main problem I see, with an unmoderated internet forum that allows complete anonymity giving yourself a virtualy infinite distance from the other people posting here, is that people are going to drop their filters. Theres no way around it. It's nothing to do with this site. It has more to do with peoples tendency to not want to treat other people like REAL human beings. We like to hide behind our computer screens and pretend that these people are virtual in some way. Which in some ways is true but behind that virtual persona sits a real life person with their own thoughts, opinions and creed.
The only solution is for people to just treat others on internet forums as real life, living and breathing human beings. Which I don't see happening anytime soon. But it would be nice eh?
*Just as a note this is all more in response to the first couple pages of the thread as I haven't read much further than that*

Just my opinion on this, as I agree that some people may act different with the distance theory. This is not true in all cases. If you end up at fan faire this year find me I will call you an asshole to your face without whispering.

Re: Freedom of Expression - let's talk
I pretty much lurk here. I dont post much because there is a certain pack here who feel their overinflated opinions are worth a lot more than they really are. I read through find the nuggets of real info and leave again.
Most of the posts on this board by the "elite" make me think the board should have been named www.EQ2Whiners.com
Should you even ask them to regulate themselves? Nah, I like seeing who the assholes are right up front, I can then filter them out easily. We all know that in a face to face encounter most of the big egos here would be obsequious little pussies anyway.
