I think this is the poster demographic you're looking to attract more of. This site has evolved much since it's inception. It's now an official fansite, has SOE personnel posting here and as such, isn't really the red-headed step-child it once was. As a result, it is attracting a broader user base than it was originally intended to. This is going to create conflict at times.

Whomever sent you that pm pretty much took the words right out of my mouth. It’s sad that a board that is supposed to be about freedom of speech has become a model of the type of moderation many sought to escape. The moderation here being the form of stalking, harassment and trolling as opposed to SOE’s post deletion, Mod warnings or post tampering. It’s all the same, just has another face. I for one am sick of seeing every damn response to a female poster include the words whore/bitch/cunt/etc. where it’s unwarranted and has nothing to do with the topic at hand. LFG you remember what my response to someone in the discussion about racism was met with? A picture of a woman with water squirting out her ass and another with a banana coming out. /shrug what either of those pictures had to do with the topic is still perplexing but it demonstrates an example of what the problem is here. Instead of taking the topic to another level and maybe talking openly about race relations and maybe coming away with an informative discussion, it became total garbage. This is what the trolls accomplish and imo they are destroying these boards in very much the same way the Forum nazis at soe destroyed those forums. This is also why I and many other people I know hardly post here. My friends in my last guild want nothing to do with this site ( I have mentioned this to you before LFG) .

Its not a question of being “tough enough” or being a wimp and not being able to “handle the truth” or having your feelings hurt. Phuleese, who gives a dam what idiots and anons have to say about us? How many REAL cases of crimes have we even seen exposed on these forums? I can think of about three in total. Its about being able to have a revelant discussion without unintellects, idiots, trolls and stalkers interrupting and derailing them with their ignorant trash-talking, derailing and non-constructive garbage.

What normal people would call "civil" discussion is rare here. Discussion involving the word "fucking retard" or "moron" the market has been cornered on. People weren't allowed to discuss gameplay issues in NGD but there were times we'd discuss MMO trends or new games, it just depended.

Survival of the fittest? This is a message board not a friggin third world country. The mob wins here and that is why only a few people post their opinions. That is also why opinions here always have to be taken with a grain of salt and may never truely reflect the feelings of the average player.

Are your honestly retarded? Using your character name/server is still mostly anonymous. It doesnt tell me where they live, it doesnt give me their first or last name, it doesnt tell me how old they are or what kind of job they have, they are all but completely anonymous. They come here with a name they chose to use in a video game for fucks sake.

Anyone could easily see that except the pussies who are actually hurt because someone insulted my computer genereated guy I run around! You have some good points.

Forum Utopia would be nice. The flames kept where they belong and the honest, informative posts where they belong. The inherent nature of da intarweb prevents this from existing in the same place. You want civil discussion on the 'net? Moderate heavy and often. You want freedom to speak out against 'the man' in his face? Welcome to EQ2Flames.

I think Ish has it nailed in that you can only accomplish the former by giving the non-flame inclined folks to their own area. A flame-free zone that goes against much of what this site has stood for up to this discussion. If the natural evolution of this site is to integrate a flame-free safety zone, you better moderate it like a mofo.

Are there topics, discussions, phrases, flames that go a bit too far? Sure there are. You gotta accept the risk of those things coming out due to 2 things:

1) Standing behind the principles of what the site is founded on

2) Some people lack the imagination and intelligence to produce anything else, instead going for the jugular and using material that may be seen by the majority as a departure from "accepted civilized behavior" in order to make their point.

What you (LFG/Niber) are left with is a responsibility to decide the course of the site evolution. Sounds like this thread is a pulse check to help with that. GL on that decision. It is certainly a big one that should not be taken lightly, nor the consequences of change be forgotten or not considered.
