Sometimes it devolves into name calling. Sometimes it devolves into tangents. Sometimes it devolves into silliness. If it didn't do these things, the discussion would simply die.

True... and in my opinion tangents and silliness are still interesting for the most part. It is just all the attacks that, for me, get boring quickly.
I suppose it was a mistake to say I prefer threads to stay "on topic." I just personally enjoy discussion more where it is a discussion and not a seemingly random list of insults.
