hey LFG i realize that you take this personally but to be honest these types of attacks are soo common its not even funny script kiddies do this for kicks.. Your site is protected to a degree. To try and communicate with whoever it is that is doing it is like trying to talk to osama.. he dont wanna talk to you.. and he never will.. There are steps that can be taken that will help you protect yourself but what it boils down to is this person may not even know who the fuck u are and what the fuck this site is for, they dont care.. all they want to try to do is either bring this site down.. or get to the root, to hack it... this is just a target to them not some revenge... if it was revenge you would be under attack 24/7 365 from multiple points and this site would be brought to its knees..

It is not hard by any means to launch a mass DDOS attack all you need is something like (i removed the name of the program because some dumbass would try to do it) and some basic computer programming skill and a fuck load of dumbass people to visit a website you create, exploit a active-x controller and bam, they program is downloaded, hidden behind a rootkit, and self-connects to the main host for commands.

To be honest running DOS attacks for the fun of it is just fucking retarded, there are ways to have more fun then to crash a server. Its not like this is a wall street database, where if it were to crash that hundreds of thousands of dollars would be lost.

Plus the person who is doing it probably had someone piss in his wheaties, and the funny part is there are so many precautions host companies provide now to negate DOS attacks, that all the kid is doing to lagging ppl and well we get enough of that on the sony servers.

Maybe the kid can redirect his attacks to SOE and make them actually upgrade thier servers, mmmm.

Am I reading that correctly? Are you suggesting someone actually commit a crime against SOE?

SYN attacks are easily mitigated by increasing the size of the SYN-ACK queue (good) or decreasing the timeout for the handshake (better), among other methods. I'm surprised it took your hosting company more than one incident to get it right.

Timeout was decreased many months ago when it first started. Apache still gets overrun with requests but the box rarely goes completely down -- just lags.
