Pour Le Merite was a WWI German award to pilots...aka Blue Max. Seems like I remember from my history learnings it having ties to Prussia, was a military order of some sort? Think Germany still has a sceince award still named this as well.....don't quote me on any of that though been a long time since I looked at any WWI history books and God knows I didn't pay attention in school.

Any way, man I would be pissed if our guild name got changed. Think I remember EULA not allowing offensive names but does it not allow names with historic reference? It's not they named the guild "Fuck You SOE for your stupid EULA", I think the name is kinda cool myself but what the hell do I know.

Originally, it was a Prussian award started by Frederick the Great in the mid 1700's.

I'd have to know why it was changed before I can decide whether or not to be outraged about it.

it was changed because it is a historical reference to an obscure prussian military medal. as someone has pointed out however, it also means "For Merit" in french, which makes sense on it's own.

However, EQ2 is full of historical references, one need only look up "Templar" in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and one would find that it is a historical reference to the Knights Templar (fighting priests believe it or not) a christian religious order.

Surely if we the very designers of the game make clear references to christian history, an obscure prussian military order award is a bit of a stretch to justify taking a way a guild name after more than a year of being active. And with 270 characters and level 60, it's not like they were hiding all this time.

I wonder if the Prussians got upset and threatened military action.

If the phrase really was French then good, hope they don't get the name back.

I'd be more irked at the person that was lame enough to report it. Once it gets into the hands of the GM, the only thing they have to decide is "does it break the naming rules or not?". There isn't much consideration beyond that.

Certain offensive names - such as racial slurs - I can understand. But for fuck's sake, why act like you're on the fucking SoE payroll? You want to be part of the Morality Police, fine. Get OUT there and volunteer at Planned Parenthood, Animal Shelter, or Women's shelter. Doing it from the comfort of your own chair, being anonymous on the internet, is fucking cowardly and you deserve whatever flack comes your way. PERIOD.

Question: Is "La Cosa Nostra" technically a guild naming violation?
