ACT over a network?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, so move as necessary.

Recently won a laptop (yay!) and I was wondering if it's possible to run ACT on the laptop to read/parse log files written on my desktop in real-time. Right now I'm running two monitors off of one video card on my desktop which can slow it down during raids and the like, and it'd be nice to move ACT along with everything else (browser, messengers, etc) to the laptop.

Both computers are running Vista Home Premium.

It is doable. You'd have to turn file sharing on. I dunno how to do that in Vista, haven't played with it. Then you just need to browse to the location of the file on the computer with the log you want to parse.

Then, if you want to send the crap to the clipboard on the other computer, open up the clipboard sharer on the gaming computer and direct the one actually running ACT to the IP address of the clipboard computer, the option is underneath where you set the log file option.

Right now I'm dealing with the fact that Vista is so "secure" that they two computers both think the other is an evil hax0r out to get me and refuse to allow one another into each other to actually share files, despite me turning off all of that crap.

I currently do this right now... So here is how I did it...

I run ACT on my laptop (which is running windows Vista). The laptop is connected to the same network as my desktop (running XP - and EQ).

What I did on the desktop was open my c:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest II folder and right click on the LOGS folder, choose Sharing and Security and then check the box that says Share this folder on the network (do not choose to allow people to modify this folder).

Go to the folder in which you installed ACT on your desktop and open the ACT clipboard.exe file (not sure if thats the name as I have renamed it)

Choose Allow connections (this is all you have to do on the desktop).

As for the laptop:

1.) Open ACT
2.) Click the ABOUT tab
3.) Under Log File, choose Open Log
4.) Search for Computers on the network, find your Desktop and double click it, you should now be able to see the LOGS folder, double click that and find the log that you currently want to be parsing and choose Open. (This should allow you to parse your encounters on the laptop; continue on if you want to share your laptop clipboard with your desktop so you can parse in-game.)
5.) Also under the about tab is a Cross Computer Clipboard Sharing section. Type in the IP address if your desktop and choose connect (BE SURE TO HAVE CHOSEN ALLOW CONNECTIONS ON THE DESKTOP PRIOR TO CLICKING CONNECT or else the program will crash.)
6.) You should now be able to CTRL-V on your desktop whenever the laptop has parsed an encounter.

I use ACT on my laptop as well, and it works just fine. I didn't know that it was possible to even parse into clipboard over a network, so thanks for that info. I'll try this as soon as I get home. Really cool.

Does this work with the ACT plugin for putting parses into chatchannels via macro (sorry, forgot the name and can't look it up right now) as well? That'd be awesome!

I'm not exactly sure what program you speak of... But jeez, you must be a "lazy" person if you have a macro that automatically does a ctrl-v

I'm sure it would work with it though. Seeing as how once your laptop has parsed the encounter, it is only fractions of a second before you hear the beep on the desktop following the one on the laptop.

Good infoz! Was curious about some of this stuff. Got the cross computer parsing working, good job with KISS (keeping it stupid simple) Will have to try that plug in as well.
