Re: LOTRO devs > EQ2 devs
The thing about LOTRO is that they're actually trying to tell the story, and they've got different points in the story they're stopping at to let the players interact. That's why there's no "end game" to speak of. They haven't gotten anywhere one would consider an end game type of place.
When it released it was all about just getting your character made, understanding the story missions, and following along in whatever part of the story you're in. They keep telling you a story, not the original one, but a story that plays around that story. Most people i've grouped with have retty much been calling whatever point in their progression by Book/Chapter. Go to Bree and read lots of "/ooc hey guys, LFF on chapter 11" . Story missions are very important to progression of the story and you get better drops and experience in story missions than you do just out wandering whacking bears and spiders.
Now, in the first free update Shores of Evendim (SOE.... someone wasn't thinking that through), they're progressing the original story, The hobbits have arrived at rivendell. They're getting ready to leave just as soon as Strider forges his sword (yeah, strider did it, with help, forget what you saw in the movie, crack a book). And right now there's a contest between the Freeps (Free Peoples) and the Armies at Angmar (yeah, I don't know what folk call them because I'm not in my 50's yet, and really, player characters don't seem much in evidence in my exploration of the PVP areas at angmar as a monster)
The story is still ongoing, but there is no end goal yet. Ultimately, I'm hoping for all out war, Free people vs the Armies of Angmar on a massive scale of blood and violence. Dead bodies everywhere, villages burned, hobbits raped, etc.
