Re: Are these my forums?
Defining and determining spam, trolling, and off topic material is the same as for pr0n.
Words can't adequately describe it, but I know it when I see it.
The problem is - this is a subjective standard. Subjective standards are interpreted differently by different people. Outside of the class forums, you really only have me making decisions on what does and doesn't meet those standards (and Niber, but he usually only acts in extreme situations to quickly remove obvious and harmful things). And while my decisions are sometimes called into question, I do try and keep them consistent and follow precedent to the best of my ability on this site.
Whether you like the decisions I make or not, I hope everyone agrees our system is easier to understand and live with than a system where 8+ different people are using their own subjective standards to determine the propriety of information within the same forums.
So within the class forums, we have 24 different people. While each of them may make a different decision concerning any particular situation, no more than one person will ever make mod decisions within any of those sections.
This fruit cocktail we have going may produce different results from section to section, but the results within a particular section are intended to always be somewhat consistent with previous decisions made within that same section, because the same person is always making those decisions.
To the extent that I or any Forum Leader was making inconsistent decisions regarding the same sections on this site, that would be a problem, because it would involve double standards, and therefore an abuse of discretion. That's the most important thing to avoid.
The Class Sections are intended to all be somewhat different and have their own personalities. If anyone objects to the way any class section is being run, you will pretty much need to show inconsistent administration of that particular section to prove your case. And that inconsistency does not necessarily include one non-class person getting frequently edited in a section where other non-class persons are not similarly edited.
That's because all posters are different, someone from outside a class who is being a dick in a section and just inciting problems may be far more objectionable than another poster who makes a polite inquiry on how to play his alt better.
This is the best we can do, people. If we tried to adopt a different set of rules, we would quickly see the limitations of those rules and unforeseen problems they would cause. The system we have in place now is the least limiting, while producing the highest quality information and best overall results possible. It's like democracy. Some people can say democracy sucks, but nobody has ever demonstrated a better, workable system.
