I think most complaints stem from the fact that the same guilds (Second Dawn, Fires of Heaven, etc) are getting into beta over and over again..
They must be branching out a bit. Ethereal Legacy's whole guild is in beta this time around.

I guess even bad publicity is still publicity.

My gf got a beta invite, but then she has gotten a beta invite every time she's applied for any SoE game (whereas me? not so lucky). But she's been a customer since 99 on the same account, I have to wonder if that affects anything? /speculate on

SD is an established raiding guild. If SoE continues to use them in testing raid content, clearly they give great feedback and are excellent when it comes to dev communication. If they sucked at either of those, SoE would be finding a new guild to use for raid testing. If anybody is saying "waaaaaahhh I didn't get into beta and SD did, waaaaahhh," quit your bitching. If they put random people together to test high end content, it wouldn't be nearly as effective as the current process is, and there would more bugs upon release. And I guarantee all of you whining would bitch harder if that were the case.

I contend that the current process is relatively ineffective based on the number of serious or obvious bugs that make it to release.

That is no way meant as a slight to the guilds that test the content. As I said in an earlier post, it's wholly the responsibility of whoever is responsible for testing. They presumably design the tests, monitor them and feed back to the release team on the status of the zones/content.

Pro.

I totally understand your point, but I still think you might be overlooking what is involved in some of the more major bug fixes.

I think the reason things go unfixed for as long as they do is because the logistics of fixing them are sticky and require more work than we think.

Not that I'm not willing to entertain the possibility that there might be times when the info simply doesn't flow. Communication problems are rampant everywhere. But I don't think that's the only reason.

Clearly not the only reason, but a good line of communication is absolutely fundamental for even a remotely successful release.

Ok, I know this may seem ridiculous, but in my opinion EL is precisely the kind of group I want beta testing. They are sketchy, they are sneaky, they are willing to do the shit you shouldnt be able to do in order to beat encounters. These are the people who will push the limits of the game well beyond what was originally intended.

I don't really see that as a good reason to select a guild. They should be selecting people willing to test (i.e. break) content. I've spoken with some of the most honest people in the world who will do their best to figure out ways to cheat new content during testing in order to help. A good cheater doesn't make a good tester.
