Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
I assume you mean 4-5 FPS, not DPS.

I also haven't had a CTD since, and I was averaging 1-2 a night.
System specs:
Athlon 64 X2 3800+
512 MB GeForce 7900 GTX
2 GB RAM (I forget the speed)
EDIT: Civ 4 also doesn't slow down nearly as bad when I have a ton of units automated.

With those system specs you shouldn't have any problem running EQ2. Now I've not ran Vista on my EQ2 system to test how they behave together, but when I run vista on my other system it definatly takes up more system resources than any prior version of Windows. One big big thing that will improve your over all performance would be additional RAM. I run with 4Gigs but that's only because I run 2 or 3 instances of EQ2 at a time. RAM and HDD Speed is what makes the real difference in Zoning speed, and with the X2 processor at 3800 you may have some processing lag associated with raid situations but you should be totally smooth at any other time. If you insist on continuing to run Vista or have no other choice some suggestions I can make would be making a special EQ2 account and turn down Vista's 'fancy' effects for while you're playing the game. This should free up alot of resources because, with windows, even when you can't see all the 'fancy' they're still using up the same resources as if they were visable. /sighMicrosoft
Again, my experiance with Vista as a gaming OS is limited, I've only tried a few things on my Vista system but it's apparent that it needs some tuning to run games at their optimal settings.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
Yeah, I meant FPS. Go me. :P
I already have the pretties turned off in Vista, and turned off the services I don't use. The CPU is my bottleneck right now... a 2ghz CPU isn't powerful enough to do a bunch of particle effects and shadows, and EQ2 isn't coded to use both cores or push that stuff off into my GPU.
The HD is a 7200 RPM SATA drive.
Like I said, I'm not sure exactly why ReadyBoost makes the game run better, but I am seeing a noticeable difference, so I thought I'd mention it.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
does ready boost act like a faster processor or more memory?
The only difference in my machine is that I run 4 gig memory (laptop hyper memory, shush if you donno what you're talking about).
And yeah, i find my processor is my slow point but as far are laptops go currently the only processors i can upgrade are 2.16ghz and 2.33 ghz for 400 to 600 bucks each, thats kinda heafty. But I find if i turn particle effects off then i am fine, no choppiness at all.
I tried my thumb drive on my machine when i first got it and mine wasn't able todo the ready boost feature even thou it was brand new, so be careful, not all drives are supported.

It's the single greatest series out there. You should check out Madlax (Yea, I know it sounds like some laxative). It's pretty similar and just as good.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
This is basically the same thing as adding a second hard drive and putting your page file on it. Actually a second hard drive would probably be a little faster than this usb thing.
If you already have a clean system with 2gigs+ ram, page file on seperate drive, and a cpu > 2.5ghz than I don't think this would help much, if at all.
If you have like 1 gig of ram, a single (fragmented) hard drive 7200 or less, and/or slower cpu, then this probably would help. But who would have a system like this and be running Vista. If you have Vista, chances are you have a decent system already.
Unless you're running less than about 15 FPS, then you will never notice gaining 4 fps with the naked eye.
But if it adds 4 dps, I'm getting it!
Also, if you want the ultimate in load times and performance and already have a nice system, get yourself a gigabyte I-Ram, aka GC-RAMDISK. Install a couple gigs of ram to it and your pc recognizes it as a hard drive. Then you can point your page file to this. Better yet, get two of them, put them in raid-0, and install the entire game on it. omg.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
I never heard of that i-drive thing but I did some reading about it and it looks pretty badass.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
I ordered that I-Ram thing and got 4gb of Ram to go with it. Time to see how fast I can get my hacked down 650mb install cd of Windows Vista to boot up.
About - vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool
The above link is a tool that lets you chop away at all the extra pointless junk that the 2.5gb Vista dvd has on it. I hacked away at an install for my Macbook that resulted in a 1.20gb install dvd and it flys.

whoua!! Noir was one of the worst show i was ever given the displeasure to watch. i think i stoped at maybe episode 10 and gave the DVD back to my friend telling him to forget about any show coming from this studio.
Madlax was prolly a joke episode 1 was hillarious not in the good way that s how i got confirmation to stay away from any show ever produce by this sutdio
