I've seen a regular version (not hacked down) of xp pro boot up in 8 seconds. That's from the time the person hit the power button, went through the boot up at begining, loading windows screen, and fully into windows ready to start a program, using this GC-RAMDISK. I'm waiting for the next generation card which is suppose to hold twice as much ram and something faster than the SATA cable for data transfer. This thing is limited by using the SATA cable at the moment.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
Seems like a waste to kill that storage just so you can boot faster. Who actually shuts off their computer?

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
You see the speed increase in almost everything you do, not just booting up.

Assuming everything you do is constantly hitting files on that ramdisk, and assuming the bottleneck is the disk access, and not CPU or GPU power.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
correct. nothing I hate more though, is the "loading" screens, and that shouldn't be using any gpu and little cpu. Well, maybe some cpu, but I'm sure most times bottleneck is the disk access (for loading screens any way).
It surely is an expensive investment if you had to buy the ram and got the whole 4 gigs to fill it. But if you already have some ddr ram laying around, for $100 to get the card, I guess it would be fun.

My tech guy told me that re-booting constantly is unneeded and undesired. Since, I leave my comp on unless I need to re-boot for updates.

Re: Vista users: ReadyBoost!
How would one go about putting their swap file onto another hard drive.
I have 2 hard drives, unfortunately both using IDE-cables to connect them, running Vista (haven't turned anything off, how would i do that?) with a CORE2 processor.
Not at home atm, and I'm not a huge techie, so I don't exactly remember other things like graphics card etc. I know it's a GeForce if it helps. 2GB of RAM

Right click My Computer, Properties, and it should be under Advanced or Performance (I switched to Vista last night, and the layout seems slightly different compared to XP, but it may be my imagination).
Basically, I recommend making a partition just for swap, so regular filesystem fragmentation won't force the swap file to fragment as well.
The max amount of swap per drive is 4GB, but you can put more by spreading it out across multiple drives. As far as size, a general rule of thumb is to use twice your RAM until you break 2GB on a desktop (CAD workstations and servers might require more), then use an amount equal to your RAM.
