Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I'm an FPS fan, though don't play them much anymore, but because of that use the wasd and mouse. Also, the F1-F6 keys are right there for fast group member switching which is nice.
As far as spells go though, I use the mouse and only the mouse for casting them. I guess just from being a big RTS and FPS fan, I'm pretty good at the mouse twitch, fast thinking/clicking with the mouse.
But back to the OP, perhaps have her try using 1st person mode, and not use the mouse much. Also I'd imagine it will get better with time, as she gets used to the movement and camera angle system.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
Are there any games out there that would get her stomach used to the movement. Like I said before, I learned with descent and did get nauseous before I got used to the movement. I've been trying to get her to actually look at things in the game instead of just moving forward, back and turning. I'll say, look up at that torch, which is tricky when you're just using the keypad or arrow keys, so I hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse so the camera is looking skyward, then I turn it back and it seems to get her a little nauseous. I know its a temporary thing and will go away once adjusted, so I'm looking for something interactive that she can control while rotating up down and from side to side.

Is she playing in 3rd person? I actually got the seasick feeling sometimes in first person, completely went away and never returned in third person.
P.S.: I honestly think you are overcomplicating this for her. You should let her play like a noob - it works for me fine. I'm sure not a gaming purist, but I don't think trying to force the WASD method is for everyone, it definitely isn't for me. You see everything you need just using arrow keys and being scrolled out in third person.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I use my mouse / arrow keys to move just have her click both buttons down to move forward while she looks around pretty simple Also I was a big FPS fan and I have no idea how people can use wsad in eq2 it would ruin my ability hot keys.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I strictly use my mouse for moving. No arrow keys, no WASD.
I hated Doom, Quake, and other FPS if tehr ewas no way to remap things so I could use my mouse only. I always play in third person.
Drove my friends batty to see me mousing my way thru Diablo back in the day. They finally gave up on trying to get me to use WASD and decided my insisting on using the mouse only is a "chick thing"

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I found a few flash things to get her used to the 'sensation', and have her playing with google earth which I think will help her get her equilibrium stable while moving around. I believe you all are right, just set her about learning her own methods of getting used to the basic game mechanics.
I'm just afraid she'll quickly get annoyed and frustrated and never attempt to play the game again, then there goes my dreams of my very own full time plat farmer.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I think she is getting frustrated at you trying to teach her the "right" way to do it when its different for everyone. I almost exclusively use my keyboard for everything. Granted the more I raid, the more I use my mouse, I have no choice with there only being 3 mappable hotbars and I really don't want to get into shift+#. But in my normal grinding, harvesting, farming, etc. I am almost exclusively keyboard, only moving my mouse over what I want to click and using my function key (default is F). I can harvest for hours without ever touching my mouse lol!
Using the arrow keys, plus pg up/pg down or whatever keys you have pan up/pan down mapped to (I use EQ1 mappings with a few tweaks) is a very viable way of moving, I've used it for 8 years now through EQ1 and 2, and never found a reason to change. Not when I'm as effective using that as anyone who uses a mouse/WASD.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
Eye opening conversation. I really can't fathom not using WASD + the mouse.
I think some classes can do better than others just using keyboard navigation. Tanks are the worst, IMO. I know at least one tank that used the arrow keys only, and trying to get him to respond to adds and target them quickly is painful.
You can definitely tell from looking at someone whether the use mouse-look or not. Keyboard only people tend to stop/rotate/move foward/repeat much more.
That said, some of the better mages and healers in my guild are keyboard only.

The basic lesson here is, never expect a woman to adapt to your mental processes. It's kind of like pig wrestling - it won't accomplish anything except making you exhausted and the pig frustrated.
