Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I learned with Doom, when it was left hand for movement, and right for alt/ctrl (fire/strafe). Moved into wasd and mouse look with Jedi knight (or maybe quake). After getting pretty competitive with Quake2 CTF, i moved to ESDF to give me more bindable hotkeys around my movement keys.
I've been ESDF + mouse for going on 11-12 yrs.
Honestly, i'd just say let her play on the noob island, let her get used to the moving around with the arrow keys at first. Also for the motion sickness, monitor size/lagginess will make a huge impact there. Smaller monitor and lower graphics to reduce the fps stutter will help.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
You just need to let her play and learn for herself. Let her adjust her own controls to how she wants and then let her play. And most of all be patient with her...

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
Have her try moving with ONLY the mouse.
I dont know if its a woman thing or what, but Ive been able to teach even my mother to move with just the mouse.
I think it is set up as
Hold left button to turn toon by moving mouse back and forth (just swinging back and forth with wrist movement)
Hold right button to change camera angle. (moving mouse front to back is look up / look down)
** These could be backwards..I havent played in several months...
Holding both buttons causes you to run and turning is done by moving the mouse back and forth with wrist just as if you were moving a cursor across your screen. foward and rearward mouse movements causes you too look up and down while running which can be a little difficult to get used to at first.
Obviously I dont strafe running my toon this way, I use arrow keys for strafing. =)
I also have all my spell bars and skills assigned very specifically and mapped to sets of keys that coordinate with each spell bar.
For instance I use F1 to F12 to run one spell bar, number pad to run another...
Dont know if that explination helped any, but Im hoping it made sense LOL

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I use arrow keys + mouse, and click all hotkeys. Never liked WADS much.. not a big fan of strafe movement for some reason.
I don't think any particular way is a hinderance tho, its all about being comfortable. You can easily be just as efficient as WADS with any setup if you are able to do it without thinking.

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I use a trackman mouse thingie too i have it set up to autorun with both keys are presses ( not the wheel) and use my thumb to go left and right up down look ( i use 1st and 3rd depending on the situation)and the keyboards mainly for hotkeys. I threebox so i got used to having stuck toons on the other side of the zone when im not paying attn and its easier to just use the mouse for the other two to catch up to the leader.. (imma dork i know lol)

Re: Teaching a new dog old tricks
I used arrow keys in EQ1 for movement, but I can't really remember why. I ended up play a ton of FPS games along with EQ1 and before EQ2, and I quit EQ1 long enough before EQ2 that I couldn't even remember what the EQ1 controls were like.
In any case I have all my important stuff on keys 1-5 and I use WASD for movement and keyboard commands for keys 1-5 simultaneously, which probably comes from running around and using number keys to swap weapons Call of Duty or Battlefield-style. I use the mouse for targeting/view and clicking buttons my left hand can't hit efficiently.
By way of games for learning a 3d view, I think my first was Star Wars: Dark Forces.

I'll say, look up at that torch, which is tricky when you're just using the keypad or arrow keys, so I hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse so the camera is looking skyward, then I turn it back and it seems to get her a little nauseous. I know its a temporary thing and will go away once adjusted, so I'm looking for something interactive that she can control while rotating up down and from side to side.

I picked up a copy of Far Cry for a mesily £8 the other weekend. Its a reasnobly slow paced fps and in the later levels it requires some key / mouse co-ordination, similar to running through your home town to the bell. If you wanted a slow paced fps to get someone used to looking around / moving / co-ordinating mouse and keys Id recomend that.
Maybe the other option would be to get her to play a scout and duel for an hour or so? Im sure you could graduate your movement so that she didnt have to look around too much to begin with.
