I love this description.

My husband who taught me how to play ( as EQ2 is the only MMO I have ever played ) goes crazy when he sees how I do things. He does things almost exculsively wiht a mouse - incluing bring up the guild, personal, and AA windows. I keep trying to get him to use U, Y and L but ... /sigh! Though for grouping, crafting and raiding I cast everything with my mouse.

The WASD movements are second nature to me now. They did take some getting used to and I think at first it was second nature to go to the arrow keys. My daughter does the same thing. ( she likes to craft for a few minutes every once and awhile and one time she ran out of fuel and I told her to go and find the merchant - she was struggling with the Qeynos door being in her way hehe was really funny, but I noticed she uses the arrows also ( she's 6 ) .)

Patience and letting her find her own method is the way to go.

Even games that use the same engine vary in movement - with FPS's there's a number of adjustable factors that'll make the visual experience & "point & click" factor different. Her eyes and hand/eye coordination will have to adjust to each one you try, and she'll have to get over motion sickness with more than a couple of them.

I went through a phase when, switching over from other FPS's back to UT, I was taking dramamine to keep from puking during matches (helps a bit with the motion sickness). My normal gameplay was high speed with mouse sensitivity cranked as high as it could go (razer boomslang, then mx518 - people would sit down to my pc and not be able to click anything) - but it took a while to get back to it and get used to it, again.

This is just to point out: she will eventually get used to it. But if you toss her in front of a bunch of different games to try to "train" her, she's not going to be a real happy camper and you might sour her on gaming all together. Just let her do her thing, be herself, and explore at her leisure - it's nice you can at least share chat, right?

A couple things you can do -

- Show her how to save her keymaps when she adjusts them so she can go back to one she likes.

-Have her turn down her mouse sensitivity, turnspeed/camera settings.

When the mouse settings are too high/sensitive, the movement on the screen is much faster than her eyes are watching for, and so her focus is "behind" where the character is moving & trying to catch up. That's huge with motion sickness.

If you can get it slowed down till the movement matches a bit more what she's anticipating, that will help - and she can speed it up as she gets more comfortable.

- Shut off autorun for now. Slow is good. Encourage her to go walk around and explore the city where she's not going to have to worry about getting eaten. There's a ton of stuff in the old world game they put in there to go look at and enjoy.

- Stuff a dramamine in her before she goes off to move around. :P

- Make sure she takes breaks.

- Don't hold off on the quests - while they involve running around and doing errands, some involve quite a bit of dialogue where she'll be sitting there reading and clicking one thing for a few minutes. Might see if she gets into the lore, and introduce her to books.

Ever go one on one with a chick named Pearl in UT?... Just curious, your description reminds me of a notorious enemy that would always give me top notch competition.

Anyhow, she likes Neriak/Evil Fae, she has learned where the broker and banker is, and I've left her to her own learning curve. The key mapping options, I'm not sure I want to introduce her to EQ2's options menu yet, its a little overkill in my opinion. If she curiously finds it on her own, then good for her, but I'm not volunteering that can of worms.

She also is getting used to the map, quest journal, and knowledge book. I think by the end of the week she'll be itching to go out and do some harvesting. We are on Nagafen so it'll be entertaining to see how she reacts to getting ganked, but I get ganked all the time and she laughs until she lactates, so it'll be a nice 'payback'.

When WoW launched I got my wife into it by telling her she could just pick flowers when she had a little bit of time to play. She enjoyed messing around but stayed at level 11 picking flowers for a good month.

Eventually she wanted to pick new flowers in new zones and that became her reason to level up. Soon she picked up other facets of the game, became a high warlord, and a successful top end raider.

We eventually switched to EQ2 and now she is a successful raider in this game.

Just let her take it at her own pace. If she has a question she will ask and eventually she will either become immersed in the game or find something else to do. Just my two cents.

I'd remember if I saw a screenie. It's been 2 years, now, so I've had a few seconds of puzzling over whether or not Pearl is a real player or a bot that drove ya nuts.

Glad to hear your SO is adjusting to the game.

Arrow keys for most movement here. WHen in combat I use my mouse to move around while autoattacking and jockeying for position and casting. I also have one of those fancy mouses with some buttons on it so I assigned some functionality to those.

LFG, I was a Default UI user until a friend convinced me to try ThorUI about a month ago. The broker window is l33tsauce supreme. Best part, it has an autoinstaller that includes eq2maps. /wheeee

Click to cure is now in Thor! When I am forced to play my defiler, it is very useful! At first I couldnt fighure out WTF those lil icons were over the top of each group member, then slowly figured it out.

But you are not alone in the ProfitUI fanclub. A lot of peoples seem to use it as well. I am now feeling the urge to try it out on one of my alts!

As someone who has played numerous air physics games where movement is as important as anything else, warsow, cpm, quakeworld etc, here's how I adjusted to mmorpg style movement.

go to third person view and zoom out as far as you can, focus on the character and show how it responds to your left right forward and back keys. don't bother with the mouse yet.

once you get the four basic directions down , focus on moving diagonally with forward and left/right then back and right/left.

The next element to introduce is jumping in combination with your directional keys, this doesn't matter so much in eq2, but there are places where this leads to an easy shortcut, such as in RoV. This is rather simple, you hold left and jump left, guess where your going.

The next step is to learn how to adjust camera ranges and angles with the mouse. Don't touch the keyboard at this point. This is best accomplished standing still when you begin so you don't have to compensate for changes in the environment around you.

Given the nature of the camera, you will always be centered on your character and can't pass objects between your viewpoint and where it is currently standing. This will come into play if your zoomed out to the max range and are in an area with multiple solid structures.

If you are using a mouse with a scroll wheel like I am, you can toggle it when running long distances, say across butcherblock or ferrott. You can change your direction simply by using left or right or even the mouse in this mode.

I see manyak posted some freeware games that help focus on movement areas. I would add warsow to that list personally.

I think the biggest mistake guys make when they try to get wives or girlfriends to play is to try to teach them too much.

I'd recommend just letting them do what they want to do and be ready to answer any question no matter how dumb it is without laughing.

Experienced gamers give newbies overload. A newbie doesn't need to know the 'best' way to do everything... if you want them to like the game then all they need to do is be able to explore and enjoy it. Anything more just causes frustration and less of a desire to play especially if you are getting frustrated or condescending (not saying OP was just that some people do when teaching things).
