There's no difference losing mit as MT either really. With all the mit buffs from yourself and your group losing 400 is gonna make jack all difference. It's been that way for a long time - the last time mit was really a stat to watch was KoS. As soon as they introduced diminishing returns curves with EoF, mitigation became pointless. I'm not saying I tank Trakanon in leather, but if I did, I really doubt the healers would notice a difference.
I don't think there's a 'correct' way to gear as a tank; some like to parse high, others prefer to get just enough DPS to hold aggro then get as much defensive stuff in as possible. Both have their merits - more DPS means faster zone clears, but if it's at the cost of a wipe, it's wasted. I try to balance the two by switching gear to suit the situation as most tanks do.
The hard and fast rule is that you need to hold aggro and not die. If you can do that you're doing your job. Once that's trivial all you really have left is to work on parses.
