When he wields his sword, he gains a proc ability exactly 9 seconds after his emote.
Since that AE is a proc based on his attack, you need to use the wand prior to him hitting you (and possibly proc'ing the ae).
The best way to ensure you don't get hit during the brief period of time while the wand is casting, is to use tower of stone about 6 seconds after the emote. A stoneskinned hit does not allow procs to go off...
As for the flaming draughts -- engage them after they reach the stairs. Do not engage them before that. If you wait, then overking will not summon / change aggro. If you engage too early, he'll summon someone and change aggro. If you engage them too late, then he'll gain an AE.
You can afford one mistake if your troubador is on-the-ball and countersongs overking if he absorbs a draught. He'll only do the ae once per flame draught he absorbs.
