Default How to: Raid Tanking?

Recently our MT has been indisposed and I've taken over the MT position in our raids.

Hate isn't a problem for me except for when I'm dead.

I throw up Fortify and Sentinel Sphere and still die rather quickly. Other than decent equipment, what can i do with my CAs to help mitigate the mass amounts of damage coming my way?

P.S. spec'd Stam/Agi/Int

Link to your eq2players so we can see what kinda gear you are toting plz?

Also, what zones are you tanking having so much trouble in?

How's your gear compared to your indisposed MT's gear?

When do you most often die? On the pull? Random in the middle of the fight?

Do your healers suck?

More info please!

ToS and Block would be the best to save you from anything imo. Sentinel Sphere can kill you more than it helps if the mob aoe to much.

well since i see it being said in all sorts of threads, i have to say i have never once died from sentinel sphere + aoe
and i normally use it just before the big aoes on the harder mobs
are people out there actually dying from this or just too scared to use it and really see?

but yah block and ToS are the best ways you can prevent yourself from dying, the tsunami is nice too in a pinch, but i use sentinal sphere for all the big aoes or if im spiking damage and have nothing else up, dont be scared of it, enjoy it heh

Sentinal Sphere has a 10 meter range. This is why you never die to absorbing a huge amount of AE damage. Generally when you raid difficult mobs with AE, maybe one other person is in that 10 meter range at maximum. If you don't run Ass/Swash transfer, there might be zero. No reason not to use it on big AE mobs unless you don't understand how it works.

I also love using SS when big AOEs are incoming. It helps protect my dirge who is usually inside with me. Granted we are still using 3 healers in MT group, but if/when we drop the druid and add a swashy there is more protecting to be had. Wait swashy has AOE avoid, so maybe not.
It has never killed me because of proc off my group members. With temp and dirge bufss you are almost guarenteed to proc Stoneskin off SS more frequently to absorb any dmaage, or proc their Stoneskins.

Start by improving your gear. Your health is rather low. Make your guildmates help you farm the gear you need to be successful. Make an effort to acquire some or all of the following items:

Ganak's Torque (Praetor of the Phylactery, Vault of Eternal Sleep)
Sarnak Earring of Station (JW Named, broker)
Sallet of the Reet Knight (Reet Knight Collection - Sebilis expert collection)
Arm Guards of the Elite Yha-lei Shock Troops (Mucus of the Deep One, Chelsith)
Ironstrand (Myconid Spore King, Sebilis)
Raging Leviathan Girdle (Bbal'Gaz the Enthraller, Chelsith)
Replace the Dark Bangle with a decent T8 Wrist item (Nak'azar Brigade Bracers, Tynnonium Shackle...)

Be sure you have all your key adornments - +health on rings and shoulders, +STA on legs and feet, Fabled T8 Riposte adorns on your wrist items, etc.

Consider finding youself a good Legendary Tower Shield, or ideally the Shield of the Green Dragon from Severilous, and go STR/AGI/INT until you have Virtue's Guard and survivability isn't an issue.

I think my question falls in this same thread so I wont bother starting a new one.

Im having trouble getting my dps up, im MA right now (due to being put to shame by a zerk) but im going to take over the MT roll real soon, but for some reason the zerker is beating me (real bad) on dps. I can throw out my emergency aggro peals but the recasts are so long and he gets aggro from me before i can get a good hold. What can I do to max my dps? is it something in my aa lines? if so what aa lines do i need? my gear is OK, nothing to write home about (legendary). my weapon is my epic (fable not mythical). Im not sure what else I can add.

If you're going to take over the MT role soon, concentrate on survivability right now. Don't get penis envy that you're not parsing like class X.

But to answer your question, your DPS might have alot to do with your group makeup versus that of the zerker.

To up your DPS, get your double attack (if using buckler), crits, and haste up. There's a ton of different AA routes you can take.

But srsly, if you're going to be MT'ing soon, focus on staying alive more than out parsing anyone. As long as the mob is on you, and you're alive, you're good for now. THEN worry about your DPS.

EDIT: Didn't Dimos just join Stealth?

I didn't expect so many to post before i could get this out.

My Character: EverQuest II Players

I die usually in the middle of the fight. I'll be hit for 7k - 10k repeatably and then the AoEs just destroy me.

This is in PR, mind you.

I've tried using ToS, and i don't have the AA for block yet, but ya....
