I am the MT for our guild and we are going to be in VP very soon. With that in mind, I have been aiming for gear choices that are more defensive. I am told the mobs in there do a lot more damage than the previous zones. I am worried that this might be lowering my dps too much though. Agro hasn’t become a huge issue yet, but as the dps classes start getting mythicals, it may become one. I was hoping to get some advice on gear selections.

Currently my avoidance is around 72% give or take with about 69% mitigation. I am buckler specced STR, STA, INT build.

For the cloak, the overking's one is great, if you are lucky enough to drop it.

T1 set shoulders are also a quite good defensive option with 3% parry.

For the girdle, the collection one if you switch cloak, or Hate trash drop for defensive purpose.

Neck piece : Hate +HP neck or the crafted legendary neck with 2% riposte.

Shackle of the court is a great wrist item too.

The hand of death from sisters heart is great for HP as a charm slot.

This is if you plan for max defense, this will get your dps down a bit.

I got lucky and the night I posted this, the cloak from OK dropped. What I was wondering was if I needed to look more towards DPS upgrades or defensive upgrades as we move into VP?

I sure hope so. I'm raid buffed at just at or slightly under 60% without temp buffs.

I'm sorry that was a typo, raid buffed I am at 60-62% depending on group/raid make up.
