Default New Guard - Feeling Overwhelmed - Some Assist Would be Great

    Hi Guys

I've got my guard to lv 40 now, mainly all solo. As I'm getting more abilties, I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed by some of the prioritisation of the CA's, so I thought Id post here to lean on the experienced guards. So here goes:

    1. Battle cry. Do you mainly use this extra migation buff when your in trouble? or do you pre cast it before pulling grouped mobs?. I find if i use it when in a group, the 3 second cast feels quite long.

    2. Hunker down. Again do you use this as soon as its up and available or leave it until your in trouble to help healers out.

While I certinaly dont have anywhere near the final CA's, even the two above exlained circumstances woul be a big help, ie use them all the time, or keep them for when needed.

Looking ahead I see we get guardian sphere, the description sounds great, but how do you know when in a dungeon a mob is going to cast aoe?..so keep spamming it? or again, leave it for a raids only and huge dmg from raid mobs?

In terms of priority on order when it comes to grouped mobs, I'm using shout for linked mobs, then dragoon spin and then assualt. My issue at the moment, is that the aoe's seem to take a while to cast, meanwhile dps are stabbing/spelling away. Is there a more effeicent way of keeping aoe agro?. I realise the guard is not a pally/SK, so we dont get many aoe's, I'm getting a bit concerned in the aoe department.

The ability plant, so it gets the attention of all mobs around you, so I'd be better casting dragoon spin, asssult/shout for aoe threat, and leaving plant for those 'oh dear' moments?

For the single target CA's, I've got a mix of higher dmg ones and otehrs that do less dmg but also +threat. Should I be starting with the highest dmg CA's first, and leave the dmg+threat ones lower down the priority?

Also I've done some reading that many guards duel weld due to low dmg, do I really have to? I realise that the dps will go up, but call me stupid but I like the idea of sword board from a roel playing perspective.

Also, while I'm ony lv 40 and enjoy the guard, how is guys at lv 95 in groups/raids? any general feedback would be great to hear.

You kind of answered your own questions there but I will elaborate nevertheless.

Remember one thing: All of your damage reduction/mitigation/stoneskins etc. are not something you should spam whenever they are up except when there is a need. They are there to save you and your group members when things are not going well or you sense (or know beforehand) that something will cause a change in the fight.

    1. Yes, just as what the description states. Use it pre-pull. Long duration even without AA modifications, so a few seconds pull is not going to waste it.

    2. Use this when you are in trouble or really have to and NOT whenever its up.

    3. You should have a mob casting bar to let you know when the AE is about to come. At level 40, i wouldn't worry about that as much but use the sphere prior to AE landing on your group. Do not spam this ability. Ponder over its description and think when you would most likely need it.

    4. Guards are not AE tanks. Yes with more AA points you can have a degree of some AE component to them but nothing that will redefine their existing role. You will get reinforcement (level 55 iirc) that will help you with AE headaches. Using shout or any other ae spell to start off with is fine. Use sentry watch ( can't remember when you get it) if some trash breaks away from you and starts hitting someone else. Plant can be seen as a "oh dear" moments or when there are a lot of mobs about.

Also you can cycle through multiple targets to maintain aggro on them during a fight. May take you longer to kill but will be effective in most cases, especially when you fear losing aggro.

A point to note, the aggro control is not your job alone, everyone in group must work together to enable you in getting a mob(s) on you.

    5. For combat arts see which ones are the most effective over time, those are the CAs that will net you the most dps over time and hence hate. Start off with big hits/debuffs to get the mob's immediate attention and then settle in your casting rotation. Your bigs will not be ready as often as the other dots (damage over time). This ofcourse excludes certain AA specific things and higher re use speeds at high levels.

A vital point to note here is your auto attacks. This will be your main dps/hate generation method in a fight. Make sure you do not miss them. If i remember correctly the originial UI has the auto attack bar as well. Check when your auto attacks are off and then squeeze in CAs between them. Usually you can hit 2,3 or may be 4 CAs in between AAs. Spam your CAs without doing so and you will lose aggro very quickly.

    6. You don't have to duel wield at all. Sometimes i do it just for the sake of putting up high dps numbers or when the mobs are easy to kill quickly or soloing. I would actually suggest that you learn how to control aggro with shield + weapon. No one expects a guard to DW and you really shouldn't.

    7. The final question and perhaps the most important. Guardian is a different beast to tame at max level. Up to that point it will most likely be a slow, boring and a painful journey (considering constant groups are not easy to get) BUT, put in the time to learn how to play it, then the fun begins. Stick with it! I can safely say that guardians is the most difficult tank class to play in the entire game and have been since the beginning and that's exactly the reason why it is so enjoyable.

Hope this answers your questions. Look up that guide as well.

    Hi guys

Sal, thanks for that great detailed reply, that's been a huge help to me really made things a lot clearer. I'm looking forward to continuing to level up and try out the new abilities, as well as getting some groups to try tanking. It's good to know the guard is a bit complicated, that makes it sound interesting and involved.

Given the extremely nice help, I'll post again when I've got a few more questions, thanks again guys.

We always used a main assist that way tank could cycle through npc while raid force focused on one npc st a time.

Another thing to remember is group setup. If main tank group is properly setup you should have no problem holding aggro unless a pesky wizard nukes before you drop reinforcements

Also getting every single ca to adept iii or mI is essential. Everything else comes with time and experience.
