We have moved the new Super User category into beta test! This category is the reward for users who've referred 20 new legitimate registered users to this site.
Kriddle was first to earn this new user group, and Miroh was second. I wanted to explain some of the benefits of this new user group to provide a progress report and hopefully give others the incentive to get 20 user referrals.
What's working now:
Super Users get a special look and many additional features for their user account. This is how the user fields and headers display in their posts:
The special look and color of the user name drills down throughout the entire system. Notice which user name sticks out like a gold tooth on a pimp in the "Who's Online" display:
But wait, there's more! Super Users get many additional privileges with their accounts. To start is the ability to change their title any time they want, through an option in the "profile" screen of the User Control Panel:
Please note: This feature is not fully working yet. Right now, it won't let you add HTML code to the Custom User Title field in this screen - but we are working on that, and Ody think's he'll be able to program in a fix to allow that. Admins will be happy to do this for our existing two Super Users upon request until this fix goes in - just PM Calthine. :smiley-happy:
Other new "Super User" only features include:
-Ability to store up to 500 PMs in their mail box - this is up from 50 for Regular Users.
-Ability to use a bigger sig and upload larger files without resizing than Regular Users.
-Ability to use HTML in posts and in sig files! (this should be working now!) Regular users use BB code as in the past.
-Ability to edit their own posts with no timer! ("edited by" note will display however). This isn't working yet, but is an expected upgrade Ody hopes to be able to program for us. I intend to enable this right to the greatest extent possible for this class.
-Several other miscellaneous ninja steath upgrades! You'll stumble into them. :smiley-happy:
Please let me know what questions you have, and whether there are any other features and benefits you think we could provide for the new Super User class.
awwww my super user icon got nerfed! I like the one you used tho!
Maerie | Maehymn | Maelya | Maelani | Maedelyn | Maewyn | Maekita | Maerilyn | Maekenna | Maelynne
Necro | Troub | Illusionist | Mystic | Warden | Brigand | Monk | Assassin | Shadow Knight | Beastlord
Carpenter | Jeweler | Tailor | Woodworker | Armorer | Alchemist | Sage | Provisioner | Weaponsmith
Just looks like overkill to me.
I learned one thing from years of UI design: Function > Form
Boldface in the logged-in list tells me that the person is an important go-to guy for something, and it would be in my interests to know whether or not s/he is online. Like an admin. Or a GM or Dev who happens to have insider perspective. This doesn't do that.
My post count shows my contribution to the forums. Which is exceedingly important in the earliest moments when you need content and fast. Not saying that every word of mine should be recorded in a book and made a religion because I say a lot of small shit...but every little bit is a catalyst for something bigger.
I'm at peace with my lot, and I don't expect or want a pat on the back. But that image is just too much.
If we can triple the size of this site, I honestly believe SoE will have to listen to us, and then we'll have a real chance to help them understand that what we want is also in their own best interests.
So there is two ways we can try and do this: slow, or fast. I'd rather try and get to a certain point quickly, instead of just letting it happen on it's own and otherwise maybe taking a year. There is no way I can think of to grow this site quickly except to reward people for referring new users. So all I'm trying to do is help people have fun and reward those who want to help.
I wanted to provide a "super" reward for a "super" effort with this program. Being in sales, I know that it's a major effort to get 20 people to take action and do something. So I think it's really important for the reward to equal the effort.
And I really think the effort in this case does justify the reward. There are sites that give $50 Amazon.com gift certificates for 20 qualified new user referrals. I can't afford that, and would never come out and ask anyone for money. So instead of buying success, this program is intended to get people to help improve things instead of just complaining about them.
The rewards for this program don't give those who choose to earn them any competitive advantage over other users. It's just all fun stuff, the ability to access more capabilities of the forum software, and providing recognition to those who have really gone out of their way to help make this site successful.
Now, if what you mean by "overkill" is the amount of time I spend talking about this, or me acting excited about this, I'm not sure how to respond to that. I guess I'd just say that I'm the type of person who fully commits to things and doesn't do anything half way. I'm an intense and excitable person who sometimes does get a little carried away with things I guess.
I'm curious whether anyone else has any thoughts about this, am I getting carried away with this, is this overkill? I'd appreciate candid feedback, thanks.
I'm not trying to shoot down the intent or the ambition, I'm just saying that the boldface & image aren't what I personally would have chosen.
On the side, I put the forum link in my character profiles, but I leave out the referrer ID parameter because I don't want someone to think it's a long URL to a crappy website that doesn't justify the time spent typing it in.
Numbers count. The more people to see what you post is the thing...not how much you've posted. Cause you can post all day everyday and if there are few people to see it what good does it do. You have more people to see it the better response you get. It's simple.
I suck at design of any sort, so I can't say much about the "super user" image thing. However, I think rewarding people who refer a good amount of people to the site is a good idea, it's a way to stimulate the boards population growth, making the community larger, making it harder for SOE to ignore us, and thereby making it so they are forced to acknowledge the superiority of Mr. T over that damned over hyped Chuck Norris.
