For my stepdad it was definitely a substitution for alcohol but it wasn't a healthy one. He was still angry and bitter (issues with his father and upbringing), and he used religion to mask his emotions where alcohol used to.

When I hear Eric (LFG) mention "nice cars" I think of spending money and a need to appear okay on the outside. Shopping can be another substitute to fill a void in your life, or mimic that rush and/or numbness that drugs or alcohol used to bring. But I digress...

This miracle of grace Eric experienced is obviously a blessing because it has brought him peace - at least in this moment. If he has truly forgiven all those who have caused him pain - including himself - then his life will forever be changed for the better. Whether God or Buddha or his own subconscious was the inner voice Eric heard that day really doesn't matter.

You know, I'm a pretty tolerant person, but the problem I have with the born-again types is phrases like this, from LFG himself:-

Quote:
Please understand that I'm not trying to shove my faith down your throat and turn you into a religious person or force you to do anything different in your own life. That would be a waste of time, and would have the opposite effect, until you are ready for that change.
It's that assumption that the rest of us mere mortals are just not "quite ready" yet - maybe it wasn't meant that way - but that's how it came across to me.....

This impression they give that those either without religion, or the "wrong" religion, as just poor misguided fools who will hopefully see the light and the error of their ways....

As an atheist/humanist/agnositic (whatever the hell I am, don't want a label other than "me" really) - I don't go around thinking that about those who do have religion - and I wish they would quit doing it about those who don't have their particular flavour of beliefs.

liberal and informed isn't that an oxymoron?

Oh and who cares if someone is religious or not. Fuck i'd have to say i know more militant athiests then i do militant Christians and I am a conservative Christian... Actually hate toward Christianity is something that a fair number of MMO players suffer from and really it's a bit cliche for me.

Yep I agree there, I read through the post and that stood out to me instantly.

Overall though, I wish Eric (LFG) the best of luck with everything. If it makes him happy and the people around him happy then good for him.

Religion is the ultimate worst invention mankind has ever created.

Faith, however, is pretty cool.
