Default EQ = High fantasy? Low fantasy? Both?

What would you consider EQ's lore to be aligned with? I know high fantasy's basically Narnia and LOTR, and low fantasy is Conan and the Witcher, but...

I'd say middle, since looking at EQ2's Freeport, there's shit in the streets, dead bodies, prostitutes, poisoning of children, etc., but Qeynos is pretty much the opposite, yet still not too pristine [look in the neighborhoods, there's a lot of broken windows and moldy doors, etc.]

EQ also has the good versus evil theme that prevails in high fantasy, but there's the exiles, and both "good" and "evil" sides aren't necessarily 100% true to their alignment, hence the thieves in Qeynos or the benefactors in Freeport. TBH, I think Neriak's the most evil city, and Gorowyn's the least.

    Your thoughts?

I'd have to agree with middle fantasy, even possibly lower. I dunno, what exactly you'd call it. Not Sci-fi... There are some pretty dark themes to some of the story lines - Even deities being pissed that their spouses are cheating, so... Gah I wish I had a good classifying term. I mean there are obviously the fantasy aspects, but when you add in everything, I don't know what the real "term" would be.

High fantasy. Doesn't refer to whether thar be great evil in the world, refers to the level of fantastic elements in the world.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of dark stuff in the lore, like the dark elves being... dark elves, vampires, the harems in Maj'Dul, Tayil and Lucan's affair, etc.

So it depends on the magic-based stuff?

Low and High fantasy are based on the world stories take place in more then anything else.

does it include Magic? Elves and dwarves?
Also take lore into account, does the world the story is taking place on have a name? a history? or just a land far far away? (in other implying it could be happening in our reality some place far away from us.)

Low fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the Adventures of Conan and the witcher would actually be considered Sword and sorcery.

As you can read in the linked wiki's The stories are more focused on their personal battles rather then world events.

I suppose EQ's stuff could be loosely based on IRL stuff - it's very possibly that the iksar could be somehow related to the Nazis with the mysticism, which has been discussed in the past here.

I know Wiki classifies Star Wars as high fantasy or something, too.

I would gander that the lore that defines the back story of EQ qualifies as high fantasy. The general gameplay and probably 99% of the quests qualify as low fantasy or less. The fact that anyone can do almost all of the quests, regardless of good, evil or neutral alignment, really kills most of the high fantasy aspects of EQ.

It would be nice to see a real good vs. evil theme in a MMORPG. The problem is that you effectively cut in half the player base.

I think FFXI's one of the few MMOs where you're a good guy, no matter what. Plus FFXI isn't as gritty as EQ, and that says something, lol.

LOTRO is high fantasy? I thought that was a pretty realistic story besides the whole magical vagina eye thing.
