Re: How much spell damage is to much?
Wow, I see why this board is called eq2FLAMES now. 10% useful data, 60% rude, and 30% smug.

Lol, you get out what you put in. I mean, look at your OP:
The first paragraph is answered in a thread 3 or 4 below this one, which was even titled: +Spell DMG and +Mental DMG adorns. How much of a clue do you need? Was it lacking neon or something?
The second paragraph must have been answered in a hundred places by now on this forum alone.
Bearing that in mind, it always amazes me people are surprised at the hostile response.

Re: How much spell damage is to much?
Ok...
Before I posted a large post/thread on the warlock board, I did searches on spell damage, caps, crit, dps efficiency, etc. etc. several things I could think of to try, I also got a few ideas for more searches after reading those threads...
But the amount of good posts that DID NOT turn up pretty much amazed me... or that came up only a long way into the process.
In the entire process I never once ran across a post where Pinski stated that crit did not increase SD... He only just posted that to my thread, and I just saw it here looking for some illusionist specific info...
Search doesn't always turn shit up - especially on +SD where most people still call it BoE.
And people keep posting because new people looking for info are constantly coming here because they hear about eq2flames either in-game, through their guild, or on the official forums. New blood is needed to keep any enterprise vigorous... welcome them and blast them at the same time is the best policy.
Cheers! :P

Re: How much spell damage is to much?
This is from Daray's Wizard DPS guide. linky
(OPTION 4) +SPELL DAMAGE (aka BOE)
With the recent changes to how "+spell damage" (aka Bolt of Energy or BOE) works, it is worth re-evaluating the comparative benefits that this gives (especially in relation to spell crits due to gear choices).
Rules:
Instead of normalizing by casting time, you will get the full benefit on non-AOE spells if the casting time is greater than 0.5 seconds and the reuse time is greater than 2 seconds. AOE spells gain 1/3 of the amount per target as do triggered reactive spells on each trigger (e.g. Iceshield – but Iceshield has 3 triggers). - +spell damage is frontloaded onto the initial hit of your spell.
- +spell damage amount can NOT crit and is instead added on as a straight value after the crit has been calculated.
- +spell damage amount is not affected by (base) damage modifiers, such as Brainstorm, or Dark Orb of the Mind
- +spell damage amount is affected by debuffs, so applying debuffs will cause the damage added on by the +spell damage value to increase.
- The cap for +spell damage is applied on a "per spell basis", and is 50% of the damage of the spell at +0 spell damage (reduced from 100% with ROK) - e.g. a spell that has a total damage spread of 800-1000, has a +spell damage cap of 400-500.
- A crit on a spell will increase the +spell damage cap for that spell cast.
- A base damage modifier will NOT increase the +spell damage cap on spells (tested via the level 35 Ice Flame spell).

Re: How much spell damage is to much?
Just for the record, Crits do increase the SD Cap, tested it myself a few weeks ago. Don't know how or when Pinski tested it...
As for daray's guide, that explains how +SD/BoE works, but the cap for wiz is going to be much higher on average than for Illy, due to higher average base damage per spell.
As for limiting to 700, that's just a rough guide. Things that affect how much you will gain from BoE at any given point are your INT, your crit%, and spell quality. Having all masters vs. all A3s will add roughly 14% to your BoE/+SD cap. INT hard caps at 1065 for level 71 and 1220 for level 80. Since crit does affect +SD cap, the higher your crit, the more often your SD Cap will be raised by a crit.
I've started putting together all the Illy spell data... should be able to put together some concrete curves for +SD in the future.

What's your test methodology? I think I can come up with my own and verify it against the wall later tonight (a simple ratio of highest crit damage vs highest non-crit damage from a T7 beam) but wanted to see if you already did the same.
