If everything below is true:
- The illy is in a group without mage-enhancing buffs
- The illy is poorly equipped (and gear from solo quests/mastercrafted counts as poorly equipped for raids), so INT isn't maxxed, +spell crit is < 35%, and/or spell damage is < ~800
- The illy has been told to focus as much time as possible on mana-regen spells
- low AA total (from being speed levelling without questing/exploring/killing nameds)
Then it's a reasonable DPS for your illusionist. The easiest explanation, of course, is the illusionist is asleep at the keyboard.
One way to tell without using ACT: does your illusionist end a long fight with full mana or low mana? A good illusionist gets enough casting time boosts to overcome their mana-regen and can burn through quite a bit mana fairly quickly
Gear makes a *huge* difference. When I first hit 80, most of my gear was from the solo quests and/or mastercrafted. In a typical group, I was averaging about 1.5k DPS. As my gear improved, I saw that number go up.
Inspect your illusionist. Some achievable stats for a level 80 illusionist:
- softcap max INT at 1220 (level*15 + 20)
- + spell damage between 800 and 1500 (and closer to 1500)
- + spell crit 40% - ?? (I'm still working on my spell crit -- everything I have could use a spell crit upgrade)
If your illusionist is falling short in all 3 categories, he needs to focus on better equipment.
These numbers are just a starting point; I'm still working on equipping my illusionist. A raid veteran could give you typical numbers for an instance/raid geared illusionist.
