I started my illusionist back when the game first came out but quickly gave up on her because her role in a group (didn't even make it to the raid point) wasn't what I thought it should be or was used to from EQ1. I loved my Enchanter in that game! Silly me thought they would be similar.
But after playing a templar for the past couple of years, I've given her another try. I've leveled her up to 51 (yeah, I'm slow

) and was actually just looking forward to being able to do a bit of dps. I so wish they would take your recommendation though and put the need for control into the whole game. That is what we are supposed to be able to do correct? Reading your post took me back to EQ1 when cc was really needed, just about everywhere it seemed. It's been so long, I didn't realize how much I missed it. hehe
So, while it will take me much longer than most of you to get there, I really do hope it involves what we were meant to be in the first place - Crowd Control.
