just curious, why do you want to have just a high hitting weapon instead of DPS?
and to answer your side question, big hitting weapons have a few problems:
1) You will spike agro like CRAZY (if you DA or Flurry)
2) You will proc fewer flurries and bolts (if applicable, and this assumes the big hitting weapon is slow)
however, hit rate tends even itself out over time...

DR is mostly pointless to any class that can get 100% crit rate since you always hit for the max value.

This is very flawwed logic: DR still affects DPS despite what you claim here. Just because you crit 100% of the time, that doesn't completely disregard the damage spread. Not to mention, you have to look at delay...lol
If you are only looking at
max hit value:
Thex: 539/5 sec = 107.8
Lava Wrought: 790/8 sec = 98.8
By your original logic Thex
does perform better from a DPS standpoint.
So even though the Lava wrought hits 'harder' it hits much less often. There are a lot of factors to also consider, like the portion of crit hits that are indeed rounded up to the max non-crit-value, procs, etc.
(Even though this isn't what you are looking for I thought I'd point it out as you might seem confused on the topic)
