Default Neat little Image Trick (Oh That Little’ol Glow) - Originally posted by Verios-EQ2

Hiya folks!

So I was browsing around the net today and stumbled upon a rather nifty little trick. I don’t remember exactly where I found it (was somewhere on GIMP Talk deep in their forums heh) but thought it had a rather nice effect. Basically it adds a rather nifty looking glow / deepens the colors on your image.

Tutorial, which I don’t take credit for, merely spreading it around heh. Well here it is in my own words:

1. Open your selected image with GIMP!.
2. Once the image is open, go to your “layers” dialog and duplicate the bottom most layer (which should be your image)
3. Lock your bottom layer (just so you don’t end up working on the wrong one) and then select the top most layer (your duplicate)
4. Once the top layer has been selected go to: “Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur”. Once the Gaussian Blur window has opened, put it to 8.0 on both horizontal and vertical, click ok.
5. Your top layer should now be pretty well...blurry, don’t worry! With the duplicate layer still select go to: “Layers > Colors > Levels”. When the Color Levels window opens put the Pick Black Point to 50 and then the Pick White Point to 180, click ok (leave others at defaults)

1. When that has been completed you need to return to the Layers window from there you need to set the top most layer (your duplicated, blurryish dark one) to which ever mode fits your image (for the most part it will be either Screen, Hard Light or Soft Light) and then play with the opacity of the layer if needed.

(Note: This was done on GIMP, perhaps someone could translate it to PS.)

Well hope this helps! I’ve attached some before and after pictures so you can see the after product, it’s a rather nice effect in my opinion.

That glow makes it more photographic.
