    Default "Value Changing Proc" Lag

For a few months now lag has been unbearable for my guild.

We thought it was the server (and to a point it is) and it got so bad that we took a vote on leaving the server. The vast majority wanted to go.

I personally stopped enjoying the game. As an enchanter I felt worthless with a 2-5 second lag dropping my dps to sometimes half its normal levels. I was unable to even come close to my lag free parses.

We tested a few suspect items but it was hard to pinpoint the problem. We eventually just asked all raiders to remove any proc item or break any set proc that forced a change in values on a large number of spells.

The result was amazing! The fuckin game was playable again. The constant daily complaining about lag stopped. Our raid dps went up (at times) by 10kdps or more.

While this is certainly a nice change, there needs to be a solution to this problem other than removing offending items. They need to be modified or coded in a manner that does not create lag and ruin our game experience.

We now have many members with gear sitting in bags they spent lots of dkp, time, and/or pp to get.

    The suspect items...

Biggest problem seems to be "Tunare's Wrath" set proc (Crystal Gift + Ring of Tunarian Grace). We have 3 mages with this set.

Vine-Wrapped Boots - Procs a damage increase modifier

Wand of Crystalized Plasma - Procs a damage increase modifier

The Arm of Erollisi - Procs a heal increase modifier

Dark Orb of the Mind - Procs a damage increase modifier

Earring of Unkempt Power - Procs a decrease in reuse time modifier

Robe of Al'Kabor - Procs a resist and reduced casting time modifier

All of these items force a redrawing of spells in spellbook when they proc or wear off. Some are worse than others. Some I am not 100% sure on. I just know that having a raid remove a dozen+ of these items reduces lag to a negligible amount.

Mantle of Darkened Hues and Barbute of the Ancient One are both items both items that reduce the next spell cast by 100%. They may also cause additional lag if they modify all spells in spellbook when proc'd.

I'm sure most raiders would like all of these items looked into. I believe some, like the Robe, have had some work done. I hope to see the rest looked at also.

Until some of these are changed, they collect dust in my bags.

The puzzling part for me is that there are a ton of guilds out there with a ton of contested loot, but I have not heard as much from them about crippling lag. This makes me think it's possibly only a small amount of items equipped by multiple people that are killing us.

If anyone else knows of items that they suspect create massive lag, feel free to list them.

How many robes do you have in raid at once?

There's a huge problem with this. Why is it that sometimes there is no lag, even with all this gear equipped?

We don't have any Robes. My list is mainly items I suspect are causing issues in general, not just with us.

I'm more concerned with getting to the root of the problem and getting it fixed. I love some of the avatar items, but if it meant less lag I'd take boring ass +spell, +crit, or damage proc over any of those effects.

People have been complaining for months. SOE just hasn't cared.

It seems to be some combination of zone plus items. For example, FTH always has terrible lag with those items, but EH is 50/50. Perhaps it's related to the load on the server plus additional load from the items.

Good question. If I could answer that, we would be closer to a solution.

Maybe it takes multiple procs within a certain time frame to create the lag or lag spikes (ae fights are awful). Maybe the server our particular instance is on runs low on memory and refreshes now and then. It also seems to me that some zones a raid loads into start as lag free and get worse.

In general, Pinski, there is no "huge problem with this", unless by this you mean procing items. We have removed all of our value changing proc gear and put it back on. Believe me, there is a massive difference. We are talking at times playable vs. unplayable.

There is no doubt in my mind that some of these items are the primary reason for our raiding lag.

Other issues for our raiding lag...

Numerous people in zone during contested.
    Servers not being rebooted enough.
    Multiple raids in same instance.
    Peak server hours.
    Charming mobs.
    Dispelling mobs.
    Certain temporary group buffs.
    and more...

Anyways, I think SOE needs a team assigned to deal with lag issues and delegate to the devs and other teams that an issues falls under.

    Get it fixed!

The mega-zones in RoK could be a nightmare.

I wonder if you can artificially create the lag using the new monk raid-wide spell that increases casting haste. One would expect it to affect spells in a blanket way, and would do so for 24 people at once. With that you might have a better basis to complain to devs about, if it were easily reproducible using a similar means as your proc items.

Would have to continually cast and recast that spell... the monk effect is pernament so once its up and "redrawn" all the spells the lag goes.

Now on my crappy system I've noticed a lag spike every time I enter Vortext on my fury... even solo as itredraws all the spells so that might be a better was to test... imagine 24 furys casting it at the same time :P

Could it possibly be due to servers logging every single event (including text/combat logs)? I run EQ2 on a shitty PC and when I turn off /log in EQ2 my PC handles it much easier... Perhaps combined with all these items the server's CPU's are struggling to keep up as the server's memory runs low? I'm no expert but this could be a problem imo...

    ...
You cast it, and 24 people have to recalc their spells. You click it off, 24 people have to recalc their spells. That's got to be way more lag than half a dozen people with procing gear that does 1/24th the effect. If people claim to notice the latter, they will notice the former.
