I really have no desire to go back to the days of EQ1 where I spend my whole play time sitting in one spot camping for a mob.
Corpse runs suck ass too btw.

However I do agree with the OP that the game has become too easy and plenty of people have been saying most of what you did since RoK launched.

I /feedback-ed constantly when I saw the solo quest rewards and the crafted loot in RK and wrote on why I thought the stuff was overpowered, too easy to get and game-breaking.
Sure enough I was right, just look at the revamped Veeshan loot table. Because shit outside of raids zones is so good, now high-end raid gear needs to be stupidly overpowered just to maintain some semblance of gear progression.

When every raider is maxed out on every meaningful stat where do they go with gear?

RoK is probably the end of this game as the people currently working on it are too stupid to possibly solve this and other problems that they've created for themselves. We're almost 5 months into RoK and its still being fixed, how the fuck can they handle another xpac?

Camping was a lot of fun, especially when you pulled the entire zone while waiting for your mob to pop, but corpse runs added nothing.

In Kunark, not to mention to some if not much extent in the other expansions, equipment simply seems to fall into your lap.

I remember in Everquest in the good old days, you started your journey with two spell scrolls (if you were a spell caster of any sort), a simply note telling you to go meet up with your guild master to start some basic training, a simple weapon not even on par with a rusty version, and a cloth shirt or robe.

Now though, when you start off, you're practically handed a full suit of plate mail, a shining magical sword, a tower shield, a bow, and enough coin (or bags simply from quests) to purchase rations and bags and pretty much anything else you could ever need.

    Why?

What happened to not being able to progress well without proper equipment? Without having to go out into the world and fend for yourself?

Why do I have it so easy to simply run a couple errands for some shmuck only to be rewarded with a LEGENDARY item that dwarfs many T7 Fabled raid pieces? What the hell is wrong with this game and its development?

When I'm "rewarded" with substantial pieces of equipment for bogus, solo, bullshit errand, kill 10 of this, or harvest shit for me quests I don't even feel like I've accomplished anything. I feel like a shmuck who just got a hand out because obviously the game considers me to be some kind of one armed, mentally handicapped 7 year old who's only good hand is crippled, so I need all the assistance I can get to ensure that through hand holding, I'm equipped enough to continue through the game at practically any pace I want.

    WHAT IN THE HELL?

I don't WANT to pass through content at "my own pace" regardless of how much work I've put into my adventuring. I don't want to wander out someplace, kill a few trivial creatures who inspire no threat to me whatsoever, let alone penalty for loss (if I could even die in these situations) and be rewarded not simply insignificant trinkets, but equipment that gives me a distinct edge over content.

If I didn't WORK for it, I shouldn't be able to tank as a Guardian! If I didn't WORK for it, my parse as a Wizard should be 900, tops. If I didn't WORK for it, my healing should be insignificant, and my mana regeneration insubstantial as a Templar.

Again I ask you, what in the hell?

I'm tired of this care bear, hold my hand and treat me like a little baby who needs to continuously suck on mommy's teet.

I can best powerful creatures and join with magnificent allies in the pursuit of greater glory. I can undergo miraculous quests to defeat epic dragons and save entire civilizations from utter annihilation. I can delve into the dark, deep recesses of the most malevolent dungeons to apprehend the greatest treasures that lie within.

For those of you who can't, you shouldn't get JACK SHIT.

The reward for slaying 10 lizards should be a muffin, maybe with sprinkles if their hides you're meant to obtain are rare drops. The reward for telling some slob in miscellaneous villa_aroundthebend that soandso_npc_01 is looking for his payment should be 4 silver 22 copper. The reward for soloing should be trivial, not because players who enjoy soloing don't deserve reward, but because that kind of content IS in fact, trivial.

There used to be this beautiful concept once, a very long time ago. This concept was conceptualized by a group of individuals we'll call Verant Interactive. This concept was known as, "Risk Versus Reward".

What was the risk of the Golden Efritii Boots of yore? Well, death was likely, and death stung. The Efritii Lord who dropped said boots was rare, thus risky that he would even spawn for hours on end. The risk for attempting to gain experience was heavy, as the creatures therein posed great threat to the unprepared; and the drop rate on the boots wasn't so fantastic either, thus furthering their value.

The reward though? To be able to lay claim to such magnificent, wondrous boots? PRICELESS.

This kind of feature in the online world is dying people, and that is a horrible, horrifying loss. This is why these games are losing luster to the old timers who reminisce in their ancient glory. Why new gamers are attaching themselves to these hopeless shambles of online role-playing games, never even understanding that there were once greater things that held so much more meaning.

This is why if you had exceptional equipment in Everquest a long time ago, you were respected, envied, and drooled over.

But now? You're just one more player with a full suit of Fabled or an entire getup of purples (WoW analogy).

Who cares? You're just one of many others. You won't stand out, you can't because nothing holds any value anymore.

It's funny too, I remember the Glowing Black Stone, a drop in Everquest that realistically didn't have very impressive statistics at all. 9 int, 10 save vs. magic that could be held in either hand slot.

It was worth a fortune too and not because it was high risk, not because the mediocre level 25ish necromancer you had to kill was exceptionally powerful, but because she was rare, and the stone was rare.

While rarity alone isn't sustenance enough to validate an items power, it is but one major factor commonly missing from today's mmo's. Other such factors of course including difficulty of creatures, CONTESTABILITY (instancing is BAD kids, say it with daddy now, letter by letter, "B.A.D"), DEATH PENALTY (oh my god who ever said losing something when you died was bad? You're a complete idiot, period), risk for death from things like trains, and inaccessibility to zone or camp (I.E: keys, flags, contestability again, or simply inappropriate manpower (I.E: inability to obtain appropriate classes to obtain said equipment)).

All these situations are gone in a world where even a brain damaged chimpanzee could max level a character in virtually any online world in a matter of days. Hell, my little sister who is JUST now turning 9 leveled up a kerran guardian to around level 29 in just a few days, WHEN SHE WAS 6!!!

Ugh, I want them back. Somebody bring them back. SOMEBODY give me a game where stupidity is not the norm. Where experience and intelligence, social aptitude and knowledge (and not monthly fee) instilled us with the necessary requirements to ACHIEVE and ACCOMPLISH.

I'm done ranting, I've said my piece.

WoW killed the world of hard MMORPG. EQ2 in T5 days was tough and unfortunately with the creation of WoW all the people who wanted it easy defected and SOE has been trying to rebuild subscribers ever since. I personally do not enjoy it however it is a business and making the game easier brings in more people than the good old days of EQ.
