no one has to actually play the game at all to open up the "trade" function... the loot cards aren't rewards for the card game... (with the exception of loot tournaments, but you don't actually have to "play" those either to get the loot card... whole 'nother topic)
{the following is not meant to be glib... but helpful for those folks who haven't forayed into the LoN trading madness yet}
1. type /lon in eq2
2. if you haven't created a user name, it'll prompt you for one
3. to unlock the Trade feature [if you haven't already] - find the LoN store in the LoN application
4. buy a 2.99 booster pack from the LoN store - HECK - buy a $1.00 event pass (it might work, i have no idea)... the concept is that - buying a single item from the LoN store opens up the TRADE feature in the LoN application...
i know, i know - i get the whole point of the post is not having to give any more $$ to SOE, but just for that single 'entrance fee' - you can now barter in-game for those special items...
the real evil is... it's like a drug addiction - you sample the 2.99 booster pack by opening it up and waiting in anticipation for the off chance that it contains one of these 'oooohhh, i'm so special' loot cards. dissapointed, you buy a second one, then a third, next thing you know - you're opening booster packs like a mad kid in a candy store ... with no parental supervision limiting your expenditure simply by the small sum of your weekly allowance ... so $XXXXX.XXX dollars later and you might get an in-game ghostly warg....
BUT - you don't actually ever have to "play" the card game....
...........ATMs in vegas = evil
