Default Mage Build Ideas for a Newb :P

Okay, I totally loved my coercer in EQ2. I like the looks of the dominator and the archon. Can I use these together in an effective combo? And what would be a good 3rd? If not, I'd like to set up alternate builds focusing on Archon and Dominator, and would therefore need some ideas on what to use alongside each of those. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Can you describe how you want to use such a build? Is it for level 50? 5 mans, 10m, 20m... Are you still leveling, questing etc. It would help to know where you are at.

Dominator and archon are unfortunately a bad combination. Not just bad in the sense that they still find benefits but are outprioritized by a different class, but in the sense that the pairing of archon and dominator is possibly the worst pairing in the entire mage calling if not the game. This is a bit surprising given the fact that both are considered support mages and have similar elements to them imo. To get an understanding of why this is we must look at the focus of their utility:

Dominator is essentially a pvp soul, its cc and debuffs are basically useless or outprioritized by rogue cc (who have other benefits on top of that) in a raiding atmoshphere and dom does not have any other major benefits to add to that. In fact, dom cc is actually shunned in advanced group/raid atmospheres. To top it off both of dominator's endlines are pvp use only, and its major dmg sources are movement triggered. However, its aoe silences, and class specific cc and debuffs make it come out very strong in a pvp environment although it has lower dps it effectively uses this in beteween ccs to build advantages, much the same way eq2 enchanter does. Dominator also does well in solo levelling (especially against solo epics). While a lot of dominator comes out in its low lvl tree (mana wrench, transmorgify, aoe silence) to really build cc dominator needs the high level (up until mental shock really) of its tree, and it pairs extremely well with sc who adds dps and melee based cc that fills in its gaps.

Archon on the other hand is the complete opposite in its uses. Archon is weaker off in solo pve and relies more on group support for its benefits to shine, it also is a class that is relatively weaker off in pvp. However, where archon really shines is that every 20 man raid NEEDS an archon for their raid because archon has high level raidwide buffs and dmg help that really come out and boost the raid dps here. Because archons don't stack raids only need 1, and since the major archon buffs are primarily located in the very top end of the tree, most raids will call for a 51 point archon build. Now what they want the archon to do besides keeping up its support buffs is to dps and put it into secondaries that help it, such as pyro. Archon in this sense is very much like the raid uses of eq2 enchanter.

Archon and dominator essentially conflict along these lines. Both rely on their higher end trees, and an archon secondary to dominator is weak for pvp bc it does not add the dps dominator needs to capitalize on cc, and the archon cast time buffs are wasted on dom which relies on low/instant cast time and low dmg spells. On the other hand an archon build with dominator is a waste of points for raid since low point cc and dps from dom serves no function in a raiding atmosphere (many of their dmg spells conflict in their situational uses too). In the end you end up exaggerating both of their weaknesses on survivability and dps.

This may seem like eq2 enchanter than can not be replicated. But it CAN, the key to replicating (at least to some extent) the eq2 coercer/illy playstyle is to realize that it can not be replicated with one class spec. Enchanter is basically filling two completely different roles in a raiding and pvp atmosphere- just jammed into one class, in raiding it is support and buffs and some dps, and in pvp and solo pve it is a cc class that works in dps. You can replicate enchanter but you need to realize that rift allows this sort of versatilty. I would suggest in that case to use dom/sc for pvp then and archon/pyro for raiding (and this isn't perfect either, just my opinion on how to fill that best).

That's a pretty perfect explanation sapphyra.

Try it out for yourself of course if you are unsure, but definitely will not be productive while levelling up.
